Coronation Street, 27 August 1984

It's August Bank Holiday Monday, and Fred Gee has just walked out (again) from the Rover's, leaving the proprietor Billy Walker to do his work, and with a badly bruised face (Fred's parting gift to Billy). Meanwhile, 16-year-old Debbie Webster goes out with a local tearaway on his motorcycle, much to the disapproval of her father, Bill.

Deirdre Barlow suspects that her husband Ken is having an affair with Sally Waterman, a journalist on The Weatherfield Recorder. Brian Tilsley comes to blows (almost) with Audrey Potter's ex-boyfriend.

Coronation Street, 28 November 1984

This episode largely revolves around the funeral of Stan Ogden, who had lived in the street since 1964. Many viewers may well have felt that he'd been doing a pretty good impersonation of a corpse for the previous half decade. But seriously, the graveyard scenes are really well filmed, and are actually quite moving. Hilda Ogden, who had kept a 'stiff upper lip' throughout the day, breaks down in tears when she's alone in her house at the end.

1975 episode of 'Thriller'. Ian Hendry is a dangerous psychopath who escapes from a psychiatric prison and embarks upon a series of murders. It's pretty confusing, until you realize that the plot revolves around identical twins, both played by Hendry. of course. Everything then falls into place and is pretty straightforward. The female lead is Donna 'Play Misty For Me' Mills, who has been in at least four episodes of this series so far.

Ken Barlow, the editor of The Weatherfield Recorder sacks Sally Waterman for giving an embarrassing story about Mavis Riley to rival newspaper The Weatherfield Gazette. Hilda Ogden's house suffers a break-in and the robbers get away with £9, lol.

Ken Barlow: " I finished my wallpapering last night, and though I say it myself, it was a classy job, not a join or a wrinkle in sight. I think Herr Schicklgruber himself would've been proud of it".

You'd never get away with writing a line like that these days.

Killer In Every Corner

'Thriller' episode from 1975. This is a bit of a ridiculous one. A strange professor of psychiatry invites some psychiatry students to his house, where he keeps a selection of 'patients'. He has been trying to cure or control the latter with a mixture of drugs and Pavlovian conditioning. Needless to say, the students start to be bumped off, the story ending with the last one alive (Joanna Pettet) escaping from the house at the very end. One of the patients, a psychopathic murderer, is played by music hall artist and comedian Max Wall, who doesn't really convince in the role. I remember that in the early 1970s, the pop group Mott The Hoople used him as a warm-up act on their tour, and that their frontman Ian Hunter couldn't understand why the audiences didn't respond to his act......
