The Six Wives of Henry VIII - Jane Seymour (1970)

A six-part series from the BBC, each episode being 90 minutes, which gives decent scope for exposition and plot development. Henry VIII is played by Keith Michell, and Jane Seymour by Anne Stallybrass. She was his third wife, and died from complications in giving birth to Henry's successor, Edward VI.

Excellent quality drama, exploring the personal issues involving the main characters and the political and religious controversies of the time. If the BBC could still produce stuff like this on a regular basis, as opposed to their current rubbish, I'd probably still be buying an annual TV licence (yes, you have to do that in the UK to watch TV programmes).

A 1973 episode of Police Story, dealing with the highly controversial idea of... get this... women police officers!

Coronation Street, 15 January 1973

Alf Roberts is elected Mayor of Weatherfield, to the disappointment of Len Fairclough, who had eyes on the post for himself. The marriage of Elsie and Alan Howard comes under strain, due to the latter's alcoholism. Funnily enough, Alan Browning, who played Alan Howard, was married to Pat Phoenix (Elsie Howard) in real life, and died from liver failure in 1979.

Jerry Booth: "So the job were a pig, then?"

Len Fairclough: "A pig, mate? It were a bloody sow, I think the last plumber employed there must have been Heath Robinson's granddad."

It makes me laugh how Jerry Booth had known Len as a friend and work colleague for nearly a decade, yet still always addressed him as 'Mr Fairclough'.

Coronation Street, 26 February 1973

Stan and Hilda Ogden throw a party at their house. Hilda has been reading Nancy Mitford's ideas about 'U and Non U' behaviour, and rather ridiculously dresses up as some kind of 1920s society hostess, complete with silver wig. Edna Gee gets off with Billy Walker in one of the bedrooms.

(75-year-old Minnie Caldwell arrives at the party)

Stan Ogden: "Would you like to go upstairs, Mrs C?

Minnie: "What for?"

Stan: "I don't know".

Coronation Street, 23 May 1973

A group of the street's residents goes on a day trip to Woburn Abbey in Bedfordshire. Stan Ogden meets the Duke of Bedford (owner of the stately home), but doesn't recognize him, addressing him as 'Jack' and asking where the bar is!

Coronation Street, 11 June 1973

Len Fairclough has bought a newsagent's shop (soon to be 'The Kabin') and installs his fiancee Rita as manageress. Rita interviews two women for the job as her assistant, and the successful candidate is Mavis Riley. Hilda Ogden and Ray Langton take dancing lessons.

Coronation Street, 4 July 1973

It's an evening of entertainment at the Rover's Return, as organist Renee Delafonte provides the accompaniment. Lucille Hewitt sings a very decent version of 'Downtown'. Minnie Caldwell complains about the 12.5 pence entrance fee, and Ken Barlow rails against the extra one penny increase on the beer prices which has been levied to meet the costs. Len Fairclough raises these issues and others with the pub's manager Glyn Thomas, but the latter gives as good as he gets. Love his Welsh accent, btw!

Coronation Street, 29 August 1973

Renee Delafonte returns to provide accompaniment for an August Bank Holiday concert at the Rovers, with the emphasis on drag acts. Norma Ford does a Ken Dodd impersonation, and Rita Littlewood stars as Danny La Rue. Elsie Howard stays at home, affected by severe depression following the jail sentence passed on her son Dennis, for defrauding old-age pensioners in a double glazing scam.

Coronation Street, 12 September 1973

There's a sponsored swimming event for charity, and Mavis Riley completes 18 lengths in the outdoor pool, costing her backers far more than they'd anticipated. Rita looks forward to a date with Ken Barlow, but is disappointed to find that he's gone to Glasgow to see his children.

Coronation Street, November 5 1973

Ken Barlow has just got married to Janet Reid, much to the surprise of the street's residents. He'd been pretty active in this area for several months, having had brief entanglements with Norma Ford, Rita Littlewood and Elaine Perkins (played by Joanna Lumley). It wasn't to last very long, ending in divorce and Janet's suicide.

Also Alan Howard supervises a Bonfire Night celebration, and needless to say there's an accident in which a teenage boy is badly burned.

Coronation Street, 7 January 1974

Arthur Harvey, leaves his wife Nellie (landlady of 'The Laughing Donkey' pub) and takes refuge with Rover's landlady Annie Walker, professing his love for her. Annie is horrified, and doesn't know what to do.

Jerry Booth takes Mavis Riley out for a meal at an Italian restaurant. Mavis is impressed that Jerry knows what Chianti Rosso is!

(The couple enter the restaurant)

Waiter: "Tavola per due?"

Jerry: "Er, no, table for two actually".
