Bullet to the Head (2012)
Another modern Stallone action movie, this time directed by Walter Hill (The Warriors). Nothing amazing but better than most modern action films. (Michael Bay should take notes from people like Hill.) Jason Momoa is surprisingly terrific.
Blacula (1972)
Scream Blacula Scream (1973)
Cheap blaxploitation flicks that are far better than their silly titles would have you believe, thanks mostly to great performances from William Marshall and better than average writing.
Unleashed (2005)
I had been told by more than one person that this was Jet Li's best English-language film. These people were right. Loved it.
Riddick (2013)
It's not surprising that this movie is far better than The Chronicles of Riddick, but I wasn't expecting it to be the best film in the series. As much as I like Pitch Black, this one has it beat. It's the most pleasant cinematic surprise I've had in a while.
Dracula 3D (2012)
Dracula turns into a giant praying mantis, and there are more bare breasts than a Cinemax softcore porn. I really shouldn't have to say anything more about this ridiculous schlock from Dario Argento (Suspiria). Thank god he's got Thomas Kretschmann in the lead role to make it watchable.
RoboCop (2014)
It sucks! It's awful! It's a disgrace to the original!
Just kidding. It's actually pretty good. Easily the second-best RoboCop film. Not that that's saying much, but it's closer in quality to RoboCop than RoboCop 2.
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006)
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011)
Death Race 2000 (1975)
Death Race (2008)
Death Race 2 (2010)
Death Race 3: Inferno (2012)
Two film franchises with four entries each, none of which I had ever seen before, until recently when I blew through them all pretty quickly.
I enjoyed all of the Pirates films to some degree, though none of them are great. I can't imagine sitting through such long and bloated movies in a theatre, but they work well on home video, watching an hour here and an hour there, more like a TV series than a single film. Even at their worst, they're so light and charming and just trying so hard to entertain you that you can't hate them. The music is beyond excellent.
Death Race 2000 is great. It's a violent satire done 12 years before RoboCop but very similar. Cheap and schlocky as hell but extremely entertaining. Death Race is also terrific, one of the better remakes I've seen, though it has practically nothing in common with the original. The two straight-to-video sequels are entertaining and well-done but probably nothing I'll ever have a strong desire to see again.
