I've been watching an episode of Firing Line from November 1977, presented by the renowned American right-wing editor and pundit William F Buckley. The main interviewee was the 'Austrian School' economist Friedrich Von Hayek: I've long considered myself as a sound money devotee, but listening to this guy and his obsession with 'The Market' and 'Price Signals' really tested my patience and powers of endurance. Buckley I quite liked on the other hand.

Here's another Firing Line episode that I've recently watched, this time an interview with Ian Smith, Prime Minister of Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) 1964-78. It was very fashionable for 'progressives' in the 1960s and 1970s and beyond to revile Smith for his UDI (Unilateral Declaration of Independence) from Britain over the issue of majority rule in his country, but how many people with at least half a functioning braincell later felt that the triumph of Robert Mugabe after Smith's demise ended up as a victory for the hapless population of Zimbabwe?

(Asking for a friend  )

Brookyn Nine-Nine (2013) on Peacock

Season 1, episode 1 (but plan to binge through episode 11 today instead of Korean shows on Netflix)

Every character elicits laughter. I've always loved this show.

Finished episodes 2 through 11. Episode 11 was a Christmas episode.

Archie: The Man Who Became Cary Grant (2023)

Finished watching the mini series on Britbox. 4 episodes

Jason Isaacs plays an elderly Cary Grant recounting his life in 1986 on stage. Like many biography films made in the 1950s, such as The Buster Keaton Story or Man of a Thousand Faces, the ending was a happy one, but unlike the films from the 1950s, I don't believe this one is fabricated. I'm somewhat familiar with Cary Grant's life and I believe what is shows is backed up by what I've learned over the years. (no puns intended) Granted, I know very little about him in the way of detail. Just the broad strokes of his life.

Ashes To Ashes

The final episode of Series 1 from 2008. As I've said before, this is very mixed - some interesting ideas in the plots, quite funny in places, but still rather crass with the identity politics themes which almost border on propaganda, and there's a certain crudity to the dialogue that I'm not overly keen on. Undecided as to whether to acquire and watch Series 2 and 3.

Still trying to work out the significance of the character from Bowie's 'Ashes to Ashes' music video, the one in the clown's clothing who makes regular appearances in the episodes. Is he 'Major Tom'? Does he represent the Grim Reaper or something of the kind?

Season 1, episode 1, Doc Martin on Sling's Filmrise British TV

Now I'm watching my least liked episode (ep.2) of Doc Martin.
Receptionist Elaine barely does her job. She takes a phone message for the doctor, and the only thing she gets right is the person is a male child. She accurate about the symptoms, which suggests it could be life threatening. He fires Elaine, and the village turns against him, including the mother of the child. This episode infuriates me. The "Team Elaine" aspect bothers me. I do like Lucy Punch, as an actress.

As a wise TV theme song once said -

Then repeat to yourself, "It's just a show
I should really just relax"
For Mystery Science Theater 3000! Doc Martin!

The Chemistry of Death

A series about a doctor who used to be a forensic pathologist, who gets asked to help in a small country town murder. It was quite good. I binge watched the whole series.

Is that new? Don't answer. I'll check. Hope it was good.

Edit: Found it. New episode from Dec. 17. I've informed my oldest son.
