Watching THE MASTER right now.
Joaquin Phoenix makes a great rotter. And Hoffaman's pompous character adores Phoenix's mysterious hooch. Which is composed of various deadly toxins, such as lacquer thinner. The two become great friends of sorts, but Hoffman uses him as a guinea pig for his faux Scientology exploitations.
'The Master' would have been
so much better if Joaquin Phoenix's character wasn't the focus of the movie. I wish it had been centered around Hoffman's character or literally any other character who I actually cared about and didn't actively dislike. I love Paul Thomas Anderson - 'Boogie Nights' is easily in my Top 50 films and 'Magnolia' isn't far behind - but 'The Master' is definitely at the bottom of my list of his films.
The fact that you like MAGNOLIA and BOOGIE NIGHTS better than this amazes me. Joaquin may be unlikable, but it makes the movie (IMO). This thing is so gritty. No hero's in this film. They are all contemptible. But for me, this is what makes it amusing.
