It may seem a bit strange, or maybe not, but I really felt like a kindred spirit with Utena. I've never felt like I've fit in with other men, but I'm not a cross-dresser or gay, I just don't feel like I'm one of them. However, I did always want to be the Prince and to fight for my Rose Bride Ugh, I'm getting misty just thinking about it, like that typical anime cliche of someone spacing out with stars over their eyes Shakespeare was my bread and butter for many years, and I still love the bard, and I found this anime very Shakespearean. While it didn't directly correlate to any specific tale of his, all the duels and the backbiting and such just reminded me of one of his plays. And the gender bending reminded me of his fabulous comedy, "Twelfth Night".
I agree with you about your previous comment that the animation may be a bit old, but it still looks very good. And some of the architecture is very well designed, which is often something that gets horribly overlooked in American animation, especially of that period. Even if some of the sets get repeated a lot, it was still never distracting like some older anime is.
I would say that the only thing that I would like to change about it, other than re-releasing it so that more people have access to it, would be that I wish Anthy deserved Utena more. Usually I'm always on the Princess's side, because males (especially in Japanese animation) tend to be stupid and insensitive to me. But in this one I thought Utena was great and that Anthy needed a bit of work on being more genuine and actually fighting for Utena, not really physically, emotionally.
It's been several years since I have seen it, so I am probably forgetting a lot. I'm very interested in hearing what you have to say about it
