Image

Godzilla reappears, this time possessed by the angry souls of the people killed in World War II, who are hungry for revenge against a world that's trying to forget the past. Three "guardian monsters," whose purpose is to defend the homeland against threats, are summoned in an effort to defeat him.

Hmmm.... I've just seen Starkweather (2004), about the 1958 spree-killing couple. Why on earth I can't resist watching stuff like this, or why I'm fascinated by people like Caril Ann Fugate, I'll probably never know.... :?

Adaptation of the Bram Stoker novel about a centuries-old Romanian vampire making his way to London with the intention of spreading the undead plague. Relatively faithful, with the exception of a subplot regarding a reincarnated lost lover that future Dracula films would steal. Directed by Dan Curtis (Dark Shadows) and written by Richard Matheson (I Am Legend).

Gone Girl.
The plot developed like I thought it would, and then suddenly went darker.

Foxcatcher.

True story of Olympic wrestler Mark Schultz, living his whole life in the shadow of his more famous brother, Dave, and struggling with poverty and no prospects after the games, is out of the blue offered a job to train the allegedly next Olympic wrestling team sponsored by billionaire and wrestling enthusiast John DuPont (played by a barely recognizable Steve Carell). A strange relationship develops between Schultz and DuPont, in which he ignores DuPont's obvious mental illness and drug use, because DuPont articulates everything he wishes he could, such as telling him he need not live in his brother's shadow anymore, and that he can finally be his own man. That is, till Schultz's relationship with DuPont sours, who then hires Mark's brother, Dave, alienating Mark. As Dave's working relationship with DuPont crumbles, so does DuPont's mental state, till in a misplaced fit of rage murders Dave. Not to spoil the movie, but anyone who pays attention to the news probably knows this story already. Over all, a very good movie about mental disintegration, envy and inferiority complexes, and living vicariously through others.

Sounds like a decent horror flick, right up my alley. :)

Under the Skin

Scarlett Johansson plays a nameless mysterious woman, who seduces lonely men in the evening hours in Scotland. I couldn't follow what was going on.

She was an alien from the planet Aspergia, essentially stealing their lives and taking their essence. But then, she adapts too much to being a human NT.

Whiplash

A promising young drummer enrolls at a music conservatory where he is taught be J.K. Simmons.

WARNING: there are several scenes where J.K. Simmons' character is outright cruel and abusive.

Lonely Hearts

Based on the true story, two homicide detectives track down a murderous pair known as the 'Lonely Hearts Killers'.

It was not too bad, but you really could not develop a sense of connection with the characters, in that you sensed how they felt or understood their hopelessness of their scenario..

The cheesiest Dracula you've ever seen fights the cheesiest Frankenstein you've ever seen.

There's more to it than that, but nobody's watching this kind of ridiculous crap for the plot. This one is right up there with Plan 9 from Outer Space.

The DVD is surprisingly excellent. Nice to see classic schlock getting this kind of attention.

Was that one of the old Universal classics?

Nope. Dracula vs. Frankenstein makes the Universal movies look like Citizen Kane in comparison. It was made in the late 60s (released in 1971) and was made up of footage from three different unfinished films, and it's about as cheesy as it gets. Here's a text review from a critic who gave it negative five stars ("so bad it's genius," according to his rating system) and here's a video review from Cinemassacre (aka the Angry Video Game Nerd) if you wanna see footage from it.
