I recently watched Hot Rod for the first time. Some parts were pretty cringe worthy, but I'd be a liar if I told you there weren't parts that made me laugh.

I've just watched a mid-1980s film called Bad Girls Dormitory. The Governor of the correctional facility, Miss Madison, was utterly outrageous, there was some jaw-droppingly dreadful dialogue and acting (especially the fight-scenes), and according to the closing credits there was a song called 'Hose Me Down', though I never noticed it.

Some day I hope I'll get fed up of enduring 80-plus minutes of mind-numbing artistic ineptitude, for the 6 or 7 minutes of 'so-bad-that-it's-good' nuggets of comedy that is (sometimes) yielded.

Nightcrawler.

Creepy sociopath Louis Bloom (Jake Gylenhall) decides to make money as a freelance crime scene camera man. He finds he makes a mark in the local TV news business by scooping his rivals, and beating the police, to accidents and violent crimes, going from entering crime scenes illegally for the shot, to altering crime scenes, to eventually orchestrating calamitous events and blood shed. Nina (Renee Roseau), the news producer he sells to - and who he also wants to sleep with - enables him for the sake of skyrocketing ratings, while ignoring the moral implications of Bloom's actions. When it's obvious that his shenanigans include everything from suppressing evidence, to causing the violent loss of life, the police are on to him. Very wonderfully dark movie, where you root for the bad guy!

I watched this last year and really enjoyed it. I thought Bloom was a very interesting character and something a bit different from the usual protagonist.

Also of interesting characters I watched a film called Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter recently. It's based on the Urban myth that I Japanese woman found a tape of Fargo and believed it to be a real story and froze to death trying to find the treasure in North Dakota. It's a slow film and very arty, but I liked the way the built up the character and didn't just make her crazy or simple, but had other layers as they build up this fantasist who doesn't quite fit in with the real world, feeling alienated and disconnected. It won't be for everyone, but if you find myth interesting then it is an intriging film on giving it a story.

I really enjoyed it. It's got some dark humour as well. It's quite an arty film, it seems like quite a lot of shots are in there just for a visual thing, but did like them, but I could see some people just finding it strange.

A nuclear scientist tries to uncover what the Japanese government knows about what really happened regarding the destruction of the power plant of which he was in charge in 1999. The presence of giant creatures, one known as Godzilla and the others known as MUTOs (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms), can no longer be kept secret from the world when the MUTOs escape their confines and Godzilla emerges from the ocean depths to go on the hunt.

Guy Maddin is damn cool! He ranks right up there with David Lynch.
