Kill The Messenger.

Jeremy Renner plays San Jose reporter Garry Webb in this fact based movie where Webb uncovers evidence that the CIA had been involved in the crack cocaine epidemic in largely black neighborhoods in order to support their Contra rebel allies in Nicaragua. Despite threats from the CIA, Webb publishes his findings to a shocked and outraged America. In a fictional story, right would triumph over wrong, good over evil. But in real life, Webb's findings are not only challenged by the media (after taking cues from the CIA), but so is his credibility, as well as a past affair of his that had nearly wrecked his marriage had been revealed publicly. His career and personal life ends in tatters. In the epilogue at the end of the movie, the CIA had publicly admitted much of what Webb had accused them of - unfortunately, this was released the same time as the Monica Lewinsky scandal, and so went largely ignored. In 2004, Garry Webb had been found dead by two gun shot wounds to the head. His death had been ruled a suicide.
Maybe the most poignant piece of dialogue occurred when a CIA agent had been trying to justify their actions in Nicaragua by saying that the lives of thousands of American kids had been saved. To which Webb had answered: "Thousands of American kids did die, and are still dying. Just not the ones you care about."
This was an outstanding movie, and I highly recommend it.

River Wild.
It stars Meryl Streep as a mother who takes her family white water rafting. The vacation does not go as planned....

Now that Battle of the Five Armies is out, I'm watching the entire Hobbit trilogy in sequence.

No Strings Attached and Friends With Benefits

Two movies in 2011 that are both about a man and a woman attempt to have actual friendships with benefits and avoid falling in love.

Lars And The Real Girl.

Very sad, very funny movie about a lonely man, probably with autism (he can't stand the physical stimulation of human touch, is very shy and awkward) named Lars Lindstrom (Ryan Gossling), who lives in a garage converted into an apartment alongside his brother and his pregnant wife. Everyone worries about Lars, and how he's alone. Then one day, he appears with his new girlfriend from Brazil named Bianca - which is really a sex doll. Lars wants everything to be proper, so Bianca lives separately with his brother and his wife (Lars and the doll are both Christians). At first, everyone regards Lars as having lost his mind, but the town doctor suggests everyone play along with Lars, so he might be able to work through his delusion. The funny thing is, the townsfolk first play along to accommodate Lars, then somewhere along the line, seem to have forgotten that Bianca is just a sex doll.
Very enjoyable movie.

Interstellar. Wow, it was different than I expected but also much better than I expected. Much was said of the scientific accuracy but it was really more a movie about a corn farmer and his children.
