I got movie from Netflix today, and tried to remember why I got it. Miraculously I remembered.

A few weeks back I started watching A Serious Man. It starts with a story about how a family became cursed. I am shaky on remembering the details of the story. Long ago, a man comes home. There is a terrible blizzard. He tells his wife he ran into a common acquaintance and brought the man home for soup. He tells the wife the man's name, and she says it could not be because he died. The acquaintance comes into the house, and it is indeed the man the wife is certain is dead. She quizzes him, and offers him food. He is not hungry. Eventually she stabs him in the chest with an icepick. There is no blood, and the wife is certain is the dead man. Then gradually, there is a small blood stain. It grows larger. He smiles and says something about over staying his welcome, and leaves. That his how the ancestors of this family became cursed.

This was a Jewish family and the wife believed the acquaintance was a Dybbuk. I looked up Dybbuk on Wikipedia and thought subject sounded interesting. The entry mentions the movie I got today from Netflix. It is a 1937 Yiddish film made in Poland called The Dybbuk. The subtitles are few, and some are too fast. I do not understand Yiddish. So this is going to be interesting.

Technically I have not recently seen this yet, but I wanted to spread the joy about the tale of the Dybbuk.

The Wikipedia entry about the film I find very interesting.

(two hours later)
It was an interesting film. I think I need to watch it again without distractions.

"Lilies of the Field" - STILL as wonderful, as when I first saw it, 50 years ago, or whenever!

Hot Tub Time Machine 2.

After altering time for him and his friends to become rich and famous, Lou (Rob Cordry) is still such an insufferable douche that someone blasts him in the genitals during a party at his mansion. So now the gang use the hot tub again to try going back in time to prevent the shooting - - only to discover that they've gone ten years into the future, where Lou is an embittered, urine soaked bum, while his son is wealthy and successful... and bald. As the time keeper, Chevy Chase, tells them, the hot tub takes them to where it knows they have to go, not necessarily where they want to. In this future time, Lou learns he has set events into motion that lead to his own past shooting. Not as funny as the original, but still a laugh.

I've got even more lined up. There's the Jeremy Brett version, the Nicol Williamson version, the Jason Connery version, and something called Macbeth on the Estate, all sitting on my hard drive. And I still need to see the James McAvoy and Christopher Walken versions I've been told about, and there are the Michael Fassbender and Sean Bean versions coming out soon, and I can't believe I still haven't seen the Orson Welles version.

I don't expect any of them, however, to match my two favorite versions, the Criterion Blu-rays of which are some of the gems of my collection:
