Vera Drake

yet another Mike Leigh film

I think it's good for me to watch movies like this. Imelda Staunton plays the title role. She also played Dolores Umbridge in the Harry Potter films. The character of Dolores seems very two dimensional compare to her role of Vera Drake, a woman who accepts no money and only wishes to help the young women in trouble "get their blood flow back." Eddie Marsen is in the film as well. I've seen him in other films but after seeing him in Happy-Go-Lucky and Vera Drake, I'm really impressed. They are polar opposite characters, and he plays both with such believable commitment.

I've recently seen that as well. I was studying Schizotypal PD, and I kept coming across the main character posited as an example of someone with Schizotypal PD. I finally decided to see how he behaved. I was a bit disappointed in his relatively mundane "odd beliefs." The plot seemed weird and random, for lack of better descriptors, and I think that I missed the point, assuming that there was one

It is one of my favorites as well.
I always thought that Demi Moore was underrated in this film.

It's Alive!

Pretty cheesy 1970's horror flick about an upper middle class couple having their second child... which murders all the doctors and nurses in the delivery room. Surprisingly enough, there were unexpected themes found in the film, such as the alienation the family, especially the father, feels when the public learns that he's the sire of a monster baby, which costs him his high profile job, and makes him feel like a pariah. Equally important is the father's eventual realization that even with untold monstrosity, love is still possible.

I should say, the movie was called It's Alive, not It's Alive! (with an exclamation point), as that's the title of an even worse movie, but without any profound subtext.
