I guess it's sort of like
Blade Runner. That movie wasn't a hit when it came out, but other filmmakers started ripping it off pretty much instantly, and a decade later it started to get re-evaluated and seen as the masterpiece that it is. It seems to be taking longer with
Jacob's Ladder, which came out 25 years ago; but just like with
Blade Runner, its influence is all over the place, both in movies and video games. (The
Silent Hill video game series owes its entire existence to
Jacob's Ladder.) Most people seem to like it these days, but the reviews I read are still only mildly positive. Maybe we'll have to wait another 25 years for it to get the respect it really deserves. But then I guess imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, eh?
