Was that the Astro Boy that was in colour(made in 1980)? The colour version was only Broadcast in Japan,Australia and Canada only.
Astro Boy was my first anime TV series I watched when I was a child but I did not recognise as a anime.Sailor Moon and Kyatto Ninden Teyande
(Samurai Pizza Cats) as the first as an anime. The first title that made anime interesting for me was the first Patlabor film I saw on TV.

I remember this tape I watched religiously about this kola stuffed animal that was actualy a living kola and came from another demension. The late grandfather gave him to the grandmother as a gift and the grandmother gave it to the girl who's name was Sandy in the English dub. The kola only revealed himself as a living creature to Sandy. The boy kola had a pink sister who wanted him to come back to their demension. I can't remember the name of it but that's the first animae I can remember watching.

Lemme see here . . . I'd have to say Voltron, Robotech/Macross, Transformers (was anime, wasnt it in the 80s?), and a few others that started around the mid-80s. Course, if anyone here has seen Betty Boop, she was American, but the Japanese loved her style so much they adopted it . . . she's the unintentional matriarch of modern anime (brief fyi).

I can't believe someone else saw Monster Rancher! I enjoyed that show, though I thought Suezo's voice was annoying and I could never figure out why Tiger's name was Tiger, when he looked like a wolf with sheep's horns.

It would have been Astroboy I think or maybe StarBlazers, they used to air one after the other on ABC's afternoon programming.
But back then they were just cartoons

The first anime I watched knowing it was anime, would have been Neon Genesis Evangelion.

In that case, mine would have to be Albator, the French-language version of Captain Harlock.

I remember publishing my translation of the French lyrics to the opening theme in some other thread....

Pokemon, Transformers, Yu-Gi-Oh, and Astroboy are the first ones I can remember. They were always on the cartoon channels.
