From the same show (Series 4, Episode 2), a Rolls Royce Corniche convertible.

....and just get an eyeful of that walnut dashboard. You won't see many of those in today's cars, even at the top end. Wooden dashboards actually used to be fairly common in quite a few British-made cars, even the cheaper ones, before the 1970s. I once owned a Vanden Plas 1300 (just a tarted up Austin 1300) which had one.

Arthur Daley being 'assisted' into a Vauxhall Cavalier Mk1 by the henchmen of local gangster-cum-businessman Mickey The Fish. To the right is a Ford Cortina Mk3. From Minder, Series 4, Episode 3.

Arthur Daley's very nice looking Jaguar XJ6 Series 3.

Minder is a godsend for older car enthusiasts, as one of its two main characters, Arthur Daley, is a used car salesman. Here are some vehicles from Series 4, Episode 5:

Image

A Jensen CV-8, the same car that was driven by John Mannering in The Baron. I think this was a pretty ugly model, especially from the front with its headlight arrangement, and its successor, the Jensen Interceptor, was a huge improvement in the looks department.

Image

A Range Rover, a sort of luxury sibling to the Land Rover, still being made today, though the original version (seen here) ceased production in 1995. These came to be regarded as a status symbol by aspirational middle class wannabe types in the UK.

Image

A funeral hearse (obviously). This looks to be based on the Ford Granada, but I can't be sure, as the badge on the grille doesn't look like a Ford one.

Image

An Austin Allegro, made by British Leyland from 1973 to 1982. Never seen one of these as a police car before. They became notorious as a symbol of everything that was wrong with British cars and the British economy in general in the 1970s. Apparently of poor build quality and unreliable, but I always quite liked them, and would've liked to own the top of the range Vanden Plas model.

Image

So just what the heck is this? Not sure whether it's British or not - it actually bears a resemblance to one or two 1960s cars from Eastern Europe.

A mid-1950s Standard Vanguard Phase 3, from Series 4, Episode 6 of Minder. These were made by the Standard Triumph Company, which in 1960 became part of Leyland Motors.

Image

Have now succeeded in identifying this - it's a Nash Metropolitan. A real oddity, as it was an American-designed car, which was manufactured by Austin in the UK for export back to the USA. From the late 50s, these were also sold in the UK, where they were known as Austin Metropolitans. Production ceased in 1961.

A British Leyland Austin Mini from Series 4, Episode 9 of Minder.

Image

Also, a Ford Orion from this episode. Typically 1980s small-medium saloon, based on the Ford Escort.

A Ford Granada Mk 2 (1977-85) from Series 4, Episode 10 of Minder. This was the company's executive model in Europe, and was succeeded by the Ford Scorpio.

Both of these are featured in a TV movie called House on Greenapple Road from 1970. I know virtually nothing about American cars from any era, so can't identify them. I think the second one may be a Ford though.

Some cars from a 1978 episode of Armchair Thriller, a Thames Television series:

Image

A Morris Marina. This model, together with the Austin Allegro, attracted a lot of ridicule for its low specification and performance combined with poor reliability and build quality, and for many critics epitomized British Leyland's decline in the 1970s.

Image

A British Leyland Range Rover. First time I've seen one of them in service as a police car.

Image

A Renault 4. These were in production for over 30 years from the early 1960s, and were the company's answer to Citroen's 2CV.

A Morris Traveller from a 1980 episode of Armchair Thriller entitled 'The Circe Complex'. This was the estate car (or 'station wagon', if you prefer) version of the Morris Minor, which was manufactured between 1948 and 1971 originally by Morris Motors, and then by BMC and British Leyland. The letter 'J' on the number plate indicates a registration year of 1970-71.

A Mercedes 190 SL (1955-63) driven by Linda Marlowe in the 1973 film Big Zapper. Amazing that Germany's industrial base had been virtually bombed to rubble by 1945, yet Mercedes could build an advanced, classy car like this barely a decade later.

'L' registered (1972-73) Austin Maxi from a 1979 episode of Armchair Thriller entitled 'Fear of God'.

BMW 528i in Mission Impossible Fallout.

BMW car chase in Paris? They must have taken notes from Ronin. Which of course had the best car chase in cinema history.
