I rented Mary and Max and watched it last night. Loved it. Far more accurate, at least for me. Max is practically me, aside from the fact that he's Jewish and obese. Far more relatable than Mozart and the Whale. Funny, smart, and never pandering. Excellent film.

It amazes me how overlooked Mary & Max is. If it wasn't on IMDB's 250 list, I never would've come across it. That film is proof that quality animated films aren't limited by country or distributing company.

Peter Seller's "Being There" is an honorary autism movie. Chauncey Gardener ( Peter Sellers) displays some autistic traits such as echolalia. I really liked the film.

You all are probably too young to remember the movie, "Harold and Maude" (1971). But, when I first started learning about Aspegers, I thought of this movie because Harold has a hard time communicating in a typical fashion. And, instead of making connections, particularly with his family, he keeps faking his death as a way of dealing with the world. It's a dark comedy and a very good one at that. Harold falls in love with an 80 year old woman and they have an affair. She sort of brings him out of his shell.

Here's the trailer:

I was just looking through the posts specifically for Benny and Joon. Benny is NT, Joon has schizophrenia, and the cousin (played by Johnny Depp) seem very Aspie to me. I wondered what others think.

Chocolate is a cool movie. A bit odd though, and not the best portrayal of autism. Still good.

Any characters with an autistic spectrum have to be portrayed correctly. Problem is that the actors and actresses can't always get it right and they unknowingly display the stereotypical views that many NTs have on Autism due to the scripting. Only watched Rainman to which half or less I can relate to, other things not so much. Does Zach's character in Hangover count? His vulnerability and wanting his friends to stick together show some traits.

I've recently watched...

Temple Grandin: great
Mozart and the Whale: it was ok. I enjoyed it
Adam: really liked this. rose byrne is so pretty :)

A favorite movie of mine for a long time has been Lars and the Real Girl. I haven't really thought about whether Lars has AS or something else, but I found him to be a relatable character in his difficulty with social interaction, his overstimulation at physical touch and some of his physical tics and ways of speaking.

I saw The Boy Who Could Fly and Mozart & The Whale, they were ok. I haven't seen Rain Man yet though (although Kim Peek, the "real life" Rain Man does not have autism, apparently)

has anyone seen Mary & Max? it's an animated film about an old man with Aspergers and it's very sad :( it's good though!

Also I think Stephan Miroux (played by Gael Garcia Bernal) from the movie 'The Science Of Sleep' has aspergers traits, as does the film's writer/director Michel Gondry

the problem i have with movies about autsim is that they all paint a rosey picture, everything is going to be alright work out BS. I want to see a autism-noir film that potrays realisticly the failures and problems, that life doesn't so wonderfully, magically workout for those who are autistic.

I've seen Mozart and the Whale which I thought was ok, Rain Man which was ok, Temple Grandin which was good, and Adam which I really liked. My favourite was Adam because I related the most to him and I like Hugh Dancy.

Although not a classic autism movie, it has to be one of my favourite portrayals of autism of all time. Forrest displays so many of the characteristics that I'd be damned if he wasn't at least mild Asperger's.

I believe the author of the book has mentioned that the character was meant to have Autism. This of course did not transfer to the movie.

As for me . . .
Rain Man
Motzart and the Whale
Temple Grandin (An HBO special)
Mary and Max

All were good save Mary and Max. It's depressing and rude. Don't waste your time. You've been warned.

I know this doesn't really count but: Blues Brothers. Dan Akroyd has Aspergers, and I think it's wonderful how far he's come.
