Trumbo.Absolute first rate movie based on the tumultuous career of movie screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, played by Bryan Cranston. As a communist working in the movie industry, Trumbo is called to give testimony to before congress, with other screenwriters known as the Hollywood Ten. Refusing to cooperate, Trumbo and the others are convicted of contempt of congress, and serve time in prison (as does ultimately the chairman of the House select Committee on Un-American Activities for tax evasion
, who had sent them up the river). After his release, Trumbo finds the only way he can make a living as a screenwriter was to work under assumed names, often for B grade schlock, which he lets others ruined by the blacklist onto as well. But his experience in prison, as well as his life after, took it's toll, nearly ruining his marriage and estranging his children, as he is overworked, and succumbs to drug and alcohol abuse. Yet, his story has a happy ending - strangely enough for one taken from life - as his scripts for
Spartacus, The Brave One, Roman Holiday, and
Exodus are not only blockbusters, but win Oscars for best screenplay, he was able to cast off the blacklist and gain the accolades he deserved. John Wayne is shown in a negative light as a d-bag, while Edward James Robinson is sympathetically portrayed as the friend who has to name names before congress in order to salvage his career. But the real villain of the movie, and Trumbo's arch nemesis, is the gossip columnist and right wing shill, Hedda Hopper, played deliciously hateful and hate-able by the incomparable Helen Mirren. Highly recommended film.
