I've been a fan of anime since 2007 after not liking it for a long time (Stupid Bible Belt brainwashing but I managed to overcome it). I generally watch original content like Gundam or adaptations of manga that I enjoy if they are well done; I actually read manga more than watch anime these days. I don't necessarily follow the anime/manga scenes, though. I mainly stick with my favorite series instead of watching whatever's the latest series for the season.

I've heard of how notoriously 'mind screwy' Neon Genesis Evangelion is. Is it truly that bad?

Pretty much depends on how you think. People with an interest in the occult will probably enjoy it more than people without.

Some of the plot got caught up in a conflict between the director and the production company, I've read.

^Another thing: how gory/violent is it? I'm mainly curious because of how strange it seems.

I found it pretty restrained on that front. The occasional spray of vital fluids comes across to me as more arty than gory, and the emotional impact fits the level of conflict and tension in the story.

^What about nightmare fuel? [Says the girl who read all 27 Claymore volumes all the way through and didn't have nightmares...]

Probably not

Somehow, I'm not that reassured...

I considered watching NGE, but I saw the total lack of movement with instead really static scenes made me feel like I could not enjoy it. I have watched the more recent movies that I think are remakes, but the third movie I found pretty terrible. I do otherwise know enough about the series to have an idea for what it is about, but I think there can be more enjoyable series now with similar things.

Good for you if you can enjoy it more than me though.

I still think you'd like Kokoro Connect a lot, Kura.

Did my avatar prompt this question?

I re-watched the first two episodes with a friend since he was interested and he said it hit him pretty hard because his own father paralled Shinji's. He wants to see more but not until he's in a better place in life.

As for myself, I didn't find it that mind screwy. I actually liked the mecha designs, the music, the animation quality, and the female characters due to my hormones really kicking in at the time. It actually got me back into the medium.

Nightmare fuel? Your mileage may vary. The gore is pretty mild and the more psychological scenes can either be hard hitting, creepy, or annoying as hell depending on how you feel. It has nothing on Berserk, Battle Angel Alita, Guyver, and Eden It's An Endless World! I will tell you that. I didn't really get any nightmare fuel from Claymore since Berserk raised that bar pretty high for me.

The manga, IMO, is better. Shinji's less of an emo kid, there's more character development, the psychology is handled better, and the finale is more satisfying. The manga actually got me into that medium as well.

The real nightmare fuel is being a Berserk fan for years and seeing the 2016/2017 anime. Now that right there is a living nightmare.

Oh it's madness in the highest degree though I highly recommend it.

Marknis: Yes, it did, actually.
Claymore is one of my favourites, especially since it [ironically] helped me through several dark years. I like Clare, Teresa, Cassandra, and Jean best.

JrJones: It's on my To Watch List, along with Saiunkoku Monogatari, Hiiro no Kakera, Tales of the Abyss, and Ai Yori Aoshi.

cberg: Hmm...three different opinions now. Interesting. 8)

Elfen Lied is the goriest thing I've watched. I like the series as a meditation on the extent and variety of human cruelty, so some gore seems inescapable. Most of my viewing recommendations have little to do with that, though.

I have the Teresa and Clare goddesses as my current screensaver.
