I also enjoy the english versions of Miyazaki's movies in Disney format. For starters, they did a good job with the music and voicing the right people to the characters.
Castle in the Sky is a good example of that.
I don't consider the disney dubs as a "good" job. Particulary Castle in the Sky, where the kids sound older that they should and with the ading of dialogues and crappy jokes.
Your stone is most powerful...
I know as one who has spoken to rocks all my life.
A stone so powerful brings happiness,
but it also bring misery.
What's more, your stone is the work of men.
I just thought I should...
has been changed to...
That crystal is extremely powerful...
but with a power that rightfully belongs...
to the earth from which it came.
To forget taht, and then to try to use...
the crystal's power for selffish reasons...
will bring great unhappiness.
-You understand?
-Yes.
Your crystal should remind us that we come from the earth...
and to the earth we must return.
A crystal that give the power to FLY is supposed to remind us we coming from earth
Put down your roots in the soil.
Let us live together with the wind.
Pass the winter with the seeds.
Sing in the springs with the birds...
No matter how powerful your weapons...
or numerous your poor robots...
you can't survive apart from the earth.
has been changed to....
Take root in the ground...
live in harmony with the wind...
plant your seeds in the winter...
and rejoice with the birds in the coming of spring.
No matter how many weapons you have...
no matter how great your technology might be...
the world cannot live without love.
So Disney...
It's only a small peek of the changes that had been made.
Now of course I use the DVD subtitles for the comparaison and I don't know japanesse. So how can I know the subtitles give us a better transtlation that the english dub? Simply, the
french dub is much more closer to the subtitles that the english dub.
What Disney has made is playing with the dialogues to make it closer of Disney movie. It could be okay for a episode of Pokemon, but not for a Ghibli movie.
BTW, Miyah. Turn out the Inuyasha serie is supposed to restart this fall.
