This had me making a Wiki search for mad hatter and that's what I found:

Although the name 'Mad Hatter' was undoubtedly inspired by the phrase "as mad as a hatter," there is some uncertainty as to the origins of this phrase. As mercury was used in the process of curing felt used in some hats, it was impossible for hatters to avoid inhaling the mercury fumes given off during the hat making process. Hatters and mill workers often suffered mercury poisoning as residual mercury vapor caused neurological damage including confused speech and distorted vision. It was not unusual then for hatters to appear disturbed or mentally confused; many died early as a result of mercury poisoning. However, the Mad Hatter does not exhibit the symptoms of mercury poisoning. Principal symptoms of mercury poisoning are "excessive timidity, diffidence, increasing shyness, loss of self-confidence, anxiety, and a desire to remain unobserved and unobtrusive."

So, mercury poisoning again ?

Looks quite interesting, just did a google image search of "mad hatter" and got a picture of Johny Depp as this, I think I remember hearing somthing about a new Alice in Wonderland movie. Johny Depp would probably be what people would think for the part with his other roles as Jack Sparrow and Willy Wonka, but this looks a bit creepy.

I liked Martin Short's version, he looks so much like the original illustrations by Arthur Rackham.

Since there are pictures of mad hatters up I thought I might just add my current avatar is a mad hatter like character in a series influenced by Alice in Wonderland(pandora Hearts), sadly can't find many of his best moments including wearing such a hat or stacking a tea set on his head.

I love Johnny Depp. I guess I have a crush on him, and have ever since he was on 21 Jump Street in the nineties. I own and watch the Pirates movies again and again because of him. But I truly wish he would not do so many bizarre characters. He said during an interview on PBS once that he did not want to become the product that Hollywood filmmakers wanted him to be--a leading man type--but these bizarre roles take it a step too far in the other direction. But I think his Jack Sparrow is brilliant.

Looks like your typical tim burton film, he may aswell make his own genre "burton-esque". It looks a bit like charlie and the chocolate factory and I didn't like that film, hopefully this will be better.

I agree--that movie creeped me out. Charlie looked too much like Michael Jackson.

<<<--- like my new forum avatar? :D

pekkla I like how your forum avatar is looking at my avatar and probably thinking "WTF?!" which is ironic given that there's a cat in Alice in Wonderland.

Anyone ever hear of the old PC game, Alice? Its based on the book, but it has a creepy, nightmarish twist to it. Its very interesting. I hope this movie is like that and not the childish, disney land style of the origional cartoon movie.

It's bound to be dark if Johnny Depp is in it. Johnny likes dark.

I think it will still be a good movie regardless. Although I think Alice should be younger.
