"Fourth Kind" movie coming out soon, your thoughts
The "Fourth Kind" is a new movie coming out November 6, 2009. It is a movie about the alien abduction phenomenon, and it stars Milla Jovivich as Dr. Abigail Tyler, a psychologist who puts supposed "alien abductees" under hypnotic regression to recover lost memories. The movie takes place in Nome, Alaska, in 2000, where there have been many occurrences of people disappearing and returning. This movie is supposed to be based on actual events, but that is entirely debatable. Here is a trailer for it on youtube:

As for my personal thoughts on this movie, I think it has the potential to be interesting. I have always had a fascination with the paranormal, and from a very young age, I got hooked on reading about the UFO phenomenon (the scientific study of UFO's being Ufology), from which I read about the Alien Abduction phenomenon. I've read many books, and I am well educated on the topic, so I hope this movie meets my expectations according to what I've read about. I personally don't believe in UFO's or aliens, but it makes for an interesting story, like an urban legend or a ghost story.
When I first saw the trailer, I was a bit surprised. The trailer was done very much in the manner of a psychological horror film, with lots of loud, quick noises, and cut, fast paced scenes. It makes me wonder if this movie is going to be more psychological terror, or more science fiction, like most movies about extraterrestrials.
The title "The Fourth Kind" is based off a system created by Dr. J. Allen Hynek (a prominent and famous UFO researcher) to distinguish and categorize the various encounters people have with UFO's. This system is known as "Close Encounters", which describes human interaction with the UFO itself, or the occupants of a UFO. Hynek's Close Encounter Scale only went up to CC3, but CC4 and CC5 were added later on. The system goes like this:
Close Encounters of the 1st Kind (CC1)- Person(s) visibly sees a UFO in the sky and observes it. The UFO usually is viewed for a finite period of time and disappears.
Close Encounters of the 2nd Kind (CC2)- Person(s) sees the UFO, and sees the UFO land on the ground. When the UFO leaves, the ground leaves an imprint of its landing, thus leaving a primitive form of physical evidence.
Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind (CC3)- Person(s) see the occupants of the UFO or interacts with the occupants of the UFO (aliens, sometimes referred to as EBE's- Extraterrestrial Biological Entities). The person(s) does not have to interact with the extraterrestrial for it to be a CC3, the alien(s) just have to be visibly seen by the person(s), whether the alien is aware of it or not
Close Encounters of the 4th Kind (CC4)- Person(s) is forcibly removed from their natural environment by extraterrestrial beings. This removal usually consists of being abducted from home, usually at night, by EBE's and then being brought up in a UFO. The other form of abduction is being abducted from a secluded area, usually when the abductee is driving along the road or being "willed" to move to a location for a convenient abduction point. The abductee is submitted to medical examinations and medical experiments. Often reproductive material and bodily samples are taken by EBE's for study. After the examination and sample taking, the abductee is sometimes allowed to take a tour of the UFO with an EBE, or is shown movies depicting various things. At this point, the aliens return the abductee to their native environment. The abductee does not remember anything of the event, except for "missing time" that they can't account for. After an abduction, it is not uncommon for an abductee to have strange dreams or nightmares about being onboard a UFO and being around "strange" beings. Abduction memories are often recalled by usage of a type of hypnotism called hypnotic regression, in which the subject is put into a peaceful trance, in which they can recall memories that might have been repressed.
Close Encounters of the Fifth Kind (CC5)- Government interaction on a secretive level with EBE's. It has been debated that the United States government has had interactions with aliens ever since the "Roswell Incident", and that a deal was struck with the aliens and the government. The U.S. Government would allow EBE's to abduct selected humans for medical experiments, and in return, the aliens would give the U.S. government some of their technology. Sound rather silly, huh?
Well anyways, the trailer shows Dr. Abagail Tyler (played by Milla Jovivoch), putting alleged "alien abductees" under hypnotic regression, with some pretty scary and terrifying result.
As for the part about the "owl", I can easily explain that. Alien abductees are abducted from a very young age and have abduction experiences throughout their lives. Usually, when abductees are younger, and when they meet aliens face to face, the interaction is so frightening and scary that the individual will subconsciously "repress" the memory so that it won't cause they the panic or terror they previously felt. Their subconscious "protects them" in this way from psychological damage. When memories of aliens are recalled, the person's subconscious replaces the psychologically harmful memory of the alien with something less frightening and easier to remember, like an owl for example, which has eyes very much like the black inverted almond shaped eyes of the stereotypical "Grey Aliens". Other animals have been used before as well, deer, dogs, rabbits, mice, cats, etc.
It is interesting to note that children abductees remember aliens in the sense of mythical or supernatural creatures. They might remember an alien as a "fairy" or a "ghost", "a small man with scary eyes", "owl man", or any number of things.
Well this is a very long and in-depth explanation, so I will leave it for your viewing and responses. I will say this much, I will be greatly annoyed/disappointed if they don't show any aliens in this movie, considering that is the subject of this movie.
I have also seen the trailer. Aliens always pique my interest, but it looks to me like a typical 21st century horror film, a catagory of film I generally find not very entertaining. Then again, few movies have matched my expectations lately, so if the reviews are positive enough, i may well see this film.

Bollocks to Abduction stories...
They're all Santa Claus in the end. The aliens only show up if no one else is there. If someone stays with them, the aliens know this and stay away. They insist they've been abducted, but not one of them has ever come back with so much as a metallic hydrogen ashtray as a souvenir. Please ..... If you want to believe in something impossible, fine. But don't try and insist I must believe in it too .....
