Any films that really freaked you out?

"Beneath the Planet of the Apes" - the scene where they are pulling off their faces to reveal the veins etc underneath - Yuck.
"Soylent Green" - My father took us to see it over and over. I was terrified of trash trucks for years
"Journey to the Center of Time" - A really bad film, but it haunted me for years.
"Slither" (A caper film from 1973) All I remember is the scene where a guy tosses around TNT and blows himself up.
"Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" - I ended up working with the director, Mel Stuart so I understand why that film is so weird.

Anybody else got stories about films that gave you nightmares?

Darby O'Gill. That was a Disney film. There was a banshee that scared me silly. Years later, some documentary said that Darby O'Gill was ahead of its time for special effects.

In the first Star Trek movie, there's a scene with a transporter malfunction. Mutated, slimy, dying people writhing on the floor. Blecch. Star Trek is NOT supposed to be gory like that.

There was another one I can't remember the name of... maybe "Saturn 5" or something? It was about an outpost on a moon of Saturn, and there is a robot that uses it's metal hand to snip off a person's hand in a fight. I think I spent the rest of the movie cringing behind my soda.

Toy Story - The scene where the toys get back at Sid. It made me slightly paranoid about my own collection of toys, to the point where I distinctly remember having a nightmare about one of them trying to kill me.

E.T.

The night after I saw that I had a nightmare that E.T. was chasing me around a seedy motel room with a straight-razor.

Not to mention he's a groaning brown-gray blob with an affinity for touching children.

The Talking Heads music video for "Blind" scared the hell out of me more than any movie I remember.

Bram Stoker's Dracula - I don't even remember how old I was, probably around 8. The first time I saw it it scared the bejeezus out of me and the second time I saw it (shortly after) I was fascinated by the concept of vampires. This movie started my interest in vampire mythology.

From Dusk Till Dawn - I was about 10 when I saw it, by myself, in a barely lit room. I had nightmares for weeks.

Akira.

Yes I watched it as a kid.

And yes, it still freaks me out. So, so much. 8O

I first saw Fantasia when I was five years old. That dead dinosaur scene gave me nightmares for years.

any number of old twilight zone and outer limits episodes featuring maimings/deformations of people into grotesquely malformed victims of evil. a primal fear of mine is maiming and pain. i don't want it to happen to me or anybody else, so any entertainment which depicts this, makes me quickly change the channel.

A lot of the old Disney films, like Pinochio (or however you spell it).

Hitchcock's Birds. I watched a part of it by mistake when I was 5. It gave me nightmares for weeks.
