In general I dress to be invisible wearing primarily blues and grays. I think that was a coping strategy that started with bullying in grade school--the less you stand out and are noticeable, the less likely you may be to get picked on, or so I thought. In stark contrast, when I go shopping for clothes, I frequently become fascinated with clothes that are metallic or have vibrant, colored patterns. I've thought that it would be interesting to just buy a whole outfit of clothes that I feel drawn to, not necessarily that I think I would feel comfortable wearing. I think I'd probably end up looking like a pimp, like Superfly, but it could be a fun experiment. Maybe I would wear it out for Halloween or something.

Back in the public school system, I was also the guy who dressed to fade into the crowd. As it turned out, it really didn't work. I was still picked on and made the butt of jokes by jocks and other assorted as*holes. Today, I generally dress pretty simply, though I am becoming a little more adventurous in my choice of clothing - though unfortunately, not by much. I kind of do the Kevin Smith thing, and wear shorts with my trench coat. Looking back, I sort of wish I would have been more daring, and dressed in something to more fit my personality, and just not give a damn what the butt holes thought.

I got a little more adventurous starting in high school, I wore a trench coat--that was mid 80's long before Columbine, I was more influenced by Bono of U2 as far as that went. I also did this weird alternating thing of dressing like a burnout one day then dressing preppy with a skinny tie the next day, partly because I was loosely associated with a couple different social groups.

What I'm talking about here though is that I go into a store where there's clothes and I'll immediately go to something flashy with an interesting texture, kind of like a crow being attracted by something shiny, my daughter is the same way. It's kind of like WHOA visually this is really awesome, it's almost like I get high off of the visual stimulation, but it's always something that I would never dream of wearing. Just for fun it would be interesting to go with that visual instinct and put together a whole outfit, which would probably more accurately be described as a "get-up" because I'd expect it to be very gaudy and tacky.

I ordered 2 t-shirts that have the sort of visual appeal that I was talking about but are just a bit outside my comfort zone:

Those are from the JiPPiJ series from Sakas Men's T-Shirts on Amazon, I was also looking at Marc Ecko Cut & Sew collection:

I just got Sheldon Cooper's Robot Evolution tee shirt for father's day. It got me compliments and interested looks.
