I have been analysing the episodes and the films, and I am just so unsure! Post ideas/comments on this thread.

If the word ret*d can be used of any person, its Mr. Bean. I mean in it the IQ sense as well (less than 70). Mental Retardation is not an Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Lorna Wing, the lady who defined AS what it is today, calls him a perfect example of someone with AS.

I see it, and I've seen a male with AS who is just like him (the same mumble and all).

No. He's a character that is supposed to be funny. His personality isn't deep enough to have AS.

I thought I read somewhere that Rowan Atkinson based Mr Bean's mannerisms on those of an autistic relative of his, but I just did a google search and came up with nothing on this.

Mr. Bean is one of my favorite characters of all time. I see a lot of myself in him.

I was thinking more HFA, myself.

I thought Mr Bean was an alien.

This x100.

Have we really gotten to the point where we're diagnosing comedy alter egos with ASD? Come on, seriously.

Delirium,

Lorna Wing, the lady who made AS what it is today, "diagnosed" him. That's as official as you can get, unless you want to use another definition of AS, but there isn't one.

Hmm...quite conclusive results!

This is really stupid. He is nothing but a comedy character with a random and daft behaviour intended to be funny.
Has she also diagnosed Looney Toons characters ?

I do see some AS traits in him, but I think he is supposed to be more of just a funny character than an AS character.

Yeah, pretty much this.

I've seen a TV interview where Rowan Atkinson himself said he never thought about Mr Bean's mental issues and he's just meant to be funny. I don't think his mannerisms were based on anything.
