What's your hypothesis (I refuse to say theory) explaining why aspies and some auties like anime so much? Or if any psychologist has looked into this before, what's their explanation? I think it's similar to the Thomas the Tank Engine explanation. In anime, the facial expressions are really obvious and are often sustained. In live action stuff and non-Japanese cartoons, facial expressions are usually less obvious. Not to imply that this necessarily applies to those who don't understand normal facial expressions, rather that the ones on anime are more meaningful and influence our minds and emotions more than the less obvious facial expressions. Anyways what's your opinion/the professional opinion?

Your points sounds logical, also aspies imitate geek habits and anime has a large geek following, so it is more likely. Anime's charm is in the plots and not so much emotional depth or symbolism. It provides another world for the aspie to enjoy - a non realistic world that the relatively realistic fiction can't provide. Aspies are morel likely to appreciate deviant worlds.

Is fantasy also a common interest in aspies?

I think it is the facial expressions being easy to read. I think anime also touches our subconscious about fitting in. In almost any anime you see its always the "loner" or "odd person" that is the hero or the one that gets the girl. something any Aspie wishes. when I watch "love" animes I feel like an NT. Watching the girls try to show their love only for the main not to see any of it.

My nerdy NT friends got me in2 it :D Its also got interesting, if usually totally illogical plots & the drawings are such that the expressions are very extreme & easy to read.

I think that it is. Same with scifi. People on the spectrum seem to really enjoy immersing themselves in fantastical worlds, myself included.

I was also going to add to add that aspies often like certain niche genres of many types, and anime fits in as one of those niche markets. For me it that it just feels different to anything else, it could be that we are often given other cues for emotion made largely obvious, but I am also often a fan of characters that show little emotion compared to others.

It often feels a lot more engaging compared to others, it can have comedy next to drama, and I often really enjoy both. Also I often like the theme that a character can break loose of the restraints imposed normaly (even physics) and kick but, it gives me the feeling that I can accomplish anything. One example of this is from Gurren Lagann which had the theme of breaking through the walls normally imposed and listening to one of their songs makes me think I can overcome my normal issues.

I know what you mean :D . I just love it when the characters go into what is essentially "super" mode and start kicking 10,000 a**es per minute; to use a well-known example, Naruto in Kyuubi mode. Very exciting, like what I assume watching football is like for NTs.

I like it simply for the more complex storylines and the imagery. It really has nothing to do with me being an aspie.

Although your input is appreciated, your reason in particular for liking anime is essentially irrelevant. There is a clear tendency for aspies liking anime. My question was what might cause this tendency, not what are people's particular reasons for liking anime.

I particulary also like Rock Lee getting serious, as he also a bit of an outcast, and it is kind of funny how he is underestimated, he looks like a dork at times, but he is pretty mighty cool.

A lot of young people on the internet like anime. I'm not sure if there's even a correlation with AS.

Bingo. CaptainIrate you already answer to you hypothesis yourself, you are simply askin for feed back on it, if you didn't like the fact that some people wouldn't agree then you should not have posted.
