Self-explanatory. I'll start:

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Tom Hulce) and Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abraham), from Amadeus
Edward D. Wood Jr. (Johnny Depp) and Bela Lugosi (Martin Landau), from Ed Wood
Marquis de Sade (Geoffrey Rush), from Quills
Oscar Wilde (Stephen Fry), from Wilde

EDIT: Spelled F. Murray Abraham's last name wrong. Oops.

One film portrayal that I WISH would have happened was for Russell Crowe to play the role of Stonewall Jackson in Gods and Generals. This almost happened but fell through at the last minute. I can only imagine how amazing this would have been IMO. Russell Crowe as Jackson in G&G............. WOW ! !!

-----

I liked

- Martin Sheen and Tom Berenger as Lee and Longstreet in Gettysburg. Also, Richard Jordan as Armistead was outstanding in this movie.

- Tom Berenger in One Man's Hero.

- Christopher Plummer as Wellington and Rod Steiger as Napoleon in Waterloo.

- Tcheky Karyo as Nostradamus, and F Murray Abraham's role in this same movie.

- Robert Carlyle as Hitler in "Hitler, the rise of evil."

- Natalie Dormer as Anne Boleyn in The Tudors

- Flyboys - I generally loved this whole movie.

- Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes.......(not a historical role but I wanted to plug my favorite character role played by any actor in this spot.)

Lots of ones that I agree with above, and one that made an indelible impression on me 35 years ago:

Richard Harris as Oliver Cromwell

Plus:

Helen Mirren as "The Queen"
Bette Davis as Queen Elizabeth I
Claude Rains as Julius Caesar
Ben Kingsley as Ghandi
James Woods as photographer Richard Boyle in "Salvador"

... I know there's others, just can't remember them right now. :)

... Pete Postlethwaite and Daniel Day Lewis as the two Conlons, father and son, jailed for terrorist crimes that they didn't commit in "In the Name of the Father".

... and Angus McFadyen as Robert the Bruce in "Braveheart".
.

I liked Cate Blanchet as Queen Elizabeth 1.

I also thought the guy who played Fred Flinstone was good.

Seconded. If only I had HBO, I'd be watching that show more often. :)
