The last time I watched the Doctor Who story Revelation of the Daleks was when it was transmitted by the ABC when I was in primary school, about '91-'93, from memory. I didn't remember that much about the story, except for a glass Dalek with a mutating human head inside, a memorial statue of the Doctor falling onto the Doctor, and Alexei Sayle as a weird DJ.

Recently, I obtained the story as part of the Davros boxset for my birthday, and Revelation of the Daleks was the only one that I hadn't really seen properly recently. So I decided to watch it.

After watching the first episode, I consider Revelation of the Daleks to be the most adult of all Doctor Who stories.

For those of you unfamiliar with the plot, you can read it here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revelation_of_the_Daleks

However, there is:

*Peri killing a mutated human being (she feels extreme remorse afterwards)

*Bodysnatching

*A really vicious woman called Tasembeker who toadies up to Jobel (who doesn't appreciate her, for obvious reasons) and Davros (who uses her) and bullies her subordinates.

*Nose-picking (I kid you not!)

*An alcoholic doctor who helps the daughter of a man interred at the Tranquil Repose, and who is tortured with his own flask of rum (I kid you not).

*The political and economic practicalities of keeping people in cryogenic suspension.

*A reference to Soylent Green

And that's for starters.

This is still an excellent Doctor Who story, don't get me wrong. It's just a bit much for children's TV.

Some YouTube examples:

Stengos begs his daughter Natasha to euthanase him. (Warning: a little gruesome)

The Doctor finds a reminder of his own mortality. A crushing reminder...

Davros and the Doctor talk shop....

I've just watched the second episode of Revelation of the Daleks. Despite its dark and adult themes, I consider Revelation of the Daleks to be the best Doctor Who story starring Colin Baker. Besides the regulars, I think the best characters are:

*Davros: We have Davros at his most vicious and cunning, and he even has a twisted sense of humour when talking about 'consumer resistance'. This is definitely Davros' best TV story to date.

*The DJ: Alexei Sayle's turn seems to be the only character to be infatuated with Peri (in the whole of her appearances in Doctor Who) who does not try to molest her, and in fact dies trying to save her life. Although kooky at the start, he shows an insightful, and somewhat shy man.

*Kara and Vogel: An interesting double act, and the main human villain of the story, with her secretary.

*Orcini: A cynical 'knight' who does a good deed at the end. Very interesting character who seems to echo people like Roland of Gilead.

well, it's certainly my favorite story of the original run. Some of the Big Finish productions bring back the black humour and horror implied through violence and gore (which it's disturbingly realistic on Audio).

I listened to the first episode of Terror Firma, and the first 20 minutes of The Davros Mission. The only truly disturbing things I have heard so far was a pair of mollusc slaves cleaning out the Dalek's ships fuel lines (by eating the corrosive residue) and bantering in a Cockney accent. That's in The Davros Mission, by the way. However, the start of Terror Firma is scary. You're just screaming at Gemma, don't go anywhere near the SOB, that's Davros FFS!

It's hard to get Big Finish audios here. I daren't order through the internet for various reasons, and I've only seen one or two in just one shop. I got 8 audios with that Davros boxset, though.
