Here's a few TV shows and movies (past and present) I like that didn't get a lot of potential:

TV shows:

Home Movies
Sit Down, Shut Up
Smart Guy
Sitting Ducks
The American version of "Creature Comforts"
The PJs

Movies:

The Thief and the Cobbler
Twice Upon A Time
The Golden Compass
Cats Don't Dance
Titan A.E.
City of Ember
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow

The Golden Compass got little praise for good reason: Its littered with satanic allusions. I much prefer the Chronicles of Narnia: solid message, yet not preachy.

Repo! The Genetic Opera and Monty Python seem underrated to me... maybe b/c they appeal to "special" audiences

LOLWUT!? Can you explain that ridiculous notion? For one The Golden Compass did suck! But because it was a watered down, censored and terrible adaption of the book. Also the book series (and especially not the censored film) has no satanic allusions whatsoever. Sure it is anti-religion themed but that doesn't mean it is full of satanic allusions but of course Christians who believe in a poorly written, unrealistic and unoriginal fiction novel wouldn't be able to tell the difference between intelligent and satanic.

TV Shows:

Sports Night. Ran for 2 seasons but then canceled due to low ratings.
Freaks and Geeks
My So-Called Life
Community (although I think it's doing OK in the ratings now. Being the Parks and Rec lead in didn't help)
Arrested Development

Movies:

Definitely Monty Python--although those are a big cult hit so maybe doesn't count.
Scott Pilgrim opened badly but hopefully will pick up some steam.
Youth in Revolt (another Michael Cera film) was pretty good, too.

I'm sorry if i offend anyone because i am sure donnie darko has a strong following here but--

donnie darko is not underrated. it's overrated. And i don't even hate the movie. It's just not that good. On a similar note, I hate the way people depict intelligent people in a lot of movies. They just make other characters talk about how they are so intelligent and they expect us to just go along with it. Donnie's above average, if not average, not genius.

Any thirteen year old moron can talk about the smurfs and Donnie was wrong about fear and love. Though the teacher wasn't Technically right either. Instead of a line. It's a circle, and all the other emotions are at different parts and fear and love are at the opposite ends. Therefore, it is a line, sort of.

(This may be incorrect though. I guess i can't be certain, being that they are emotions) You can say that maybe donnie might mean that. But the teacher's so close to being right, the fact that he doesn't just explain it says something about the writer's stupidity because that would have been great character development of his intelligence (how do u like them apples--good will hunting allusion) instead they end it on a superficial go to next scene and make a funny remark. Which i enjoyed but they could have still done that anyway.

Good will hunting on the other hand was done extremely well with his knowledge of textbooks and such and such.

Other than the cliche child vs authority theme and donnie's percieved intelligence it was a good movie.

one more rant on movies someone might think is underrated.

The boondock saints sucked too, less than the second one tho. The director got lucky that the first one wasn't worse. (if a monkey bangs long enough on a keyboard he's bound to type shakespeare at least once) The idea of the movie was good. But there was no depth put into it at all and a deus ex machina, with them having God on their side does not help.

Oh and to connect with what i said earlier about stupid geniuses in movies. WIlliam Dafoe (sp?) was not that good of a detective. my dad's a police officer, so i have a little background in how things are done, and all they did was make the police officers look like the dumbest people in the world, so dafoe could be seen as a halfway decent detective. There is no way none of those cops wouldn't be able to figure out that the guy had two guns.

And the whole kennedy thing done at the strip club? WILLIAM DAFOE COULDN'T FIGURE THAT OUT?

wow i cant believe how much i just said on these two movies. i am sorry if i offended anyone because movies are purely subjective in taste, and therefore, i am not correct, i just think i should be correct.
On the underrated thing though. they are definitely not underrated because i have only met one person that didn't say the movie was at least okay.

(I do find both movies indifferent to watch, though irritating at times) i loved both movies when i first saw them tho.

now, onto my thoughts (feel free to critique) haha

most underrated television show--
Supernatural (though it has its bad episodes and angsty moments especially towards the end. It has a small cult following being on the CW though.) I love how they incorporate religion (im not religious) and badassery

most underrated move--

i cant think of one. I recently saw Kalifornia. Had never heard of it, but it had david duchoveny and brad pitt in early roles both of whom i enjoy. And it was a very good movie for being something i had never even heard of. (As in, above mediocre)

IM sorry but i must be in a bad mood cuz i have more

arrested development---one of the best shows ever in my opinion It also did really well in ratings. Therefore not underrated.

Same with firefly

or a clockwork orange. That movies just old. All the british people were seriously going crazy over that movie (though i think this movie is on the line beingf underrated and debated on putting it up here.

sorry if anybody thinks i took any sort of shot at them. i normally try not to act on my opinion in such a way
