I hated it... I love the Broadway version but this one is just terrible. I mean Emmy Rossum was an "okay" Christine but wasn't great... But Gerard Butler was a terrible Phantom and to make things worse he can't sing. I also hated some of Schumachers artistic decisions on the film.

i hated it too. agreed about emily rossum. what you said about gerard butler is an understatement. what "artistic decisions" did you hate?

on a side note, i've seen the broadway play recently, it was ok. christine's voice was too thin, the phantom sounded like raoul, and raoul was just there. also they made some minor changes i didn't like.

BTW, if you want to hear a REALLY good phantom, look up michael crawford's version on youtube

Someone was nice enough to give me the DVD as a gift after I'd mentioned to them I liked the Andrew Lloyd Webber stage version. Its been so long since I've seen the stage version, however, I can't remember it visually that much - most of my memory comes from the original cast audio recordings.

I thought Gerard was TERRIBLE at the start of the film. But as the film went on, he either got better (strange, since I highly doubt they shot the film scene by scene in order) or I just found him less distracting. It just seemed like the first song or two that The Phantom character performs exposed Gerard's voice as ill-suited to the role the most. In any case, I won't say I liked him at the end, but by the end I didn't mind him. But comparing him to someone like Michael Crawford, well, Gerard could never do justice to the roll. The other thing I didn't like about Gerard, well, being a man and not one to be an authority on the looks of other men, I still thought the guy's appearance was ill-suited to the role - I mean, was The Phantom supposed to be that of an otherwise very handsome guy, just with a half disfigured face entirely covered by a mask? I sort of pictured him mentally as an average looking guy with his face disfigured.

As for Emily, I thought she was surprisingly good and her performance + the art / costume direction and camera direction really made the film for me. I'd probably give it a B+ or an A-. To be honest I can't imagine a worse casting choice for The Phantom than Gerard, even though he stopped bothering me by the end of the film. Had he been cast even halfway decently, it would have moved the film into A/A+ territory.

I thought the movie was okay. It didn't really "wow" me.

My aunt and uncle think it's the best movie they've ever seen, even after they've seen the stage show.
