I have this theory: when people describe something as "The Worst Movie Ever", they really mean the most BORING movie ever. I've seen god awful films like "Troll 2" and "The Room", but both at least held my interest. To me, the worst movie ever is one that fails to engage you on any level, where the characters are uninteresting, and nothing happens or is accomplished.

I thought we could discuss what movies those would be. I'll provide a few examples:

- The "Twilight" movies. Forget all the other criticism of the "Twilight" series. I've sat through all three films so far, and my biggest problem? They're BORING. The performances are listless, the pace is leaden, and almost nothing is accomplished and nothing has happened by the end of every one of them.
- Deathly Hallows Part 1. To be fair to all the "Twilight" fans, I'll include a movie from a series I love. And this bums me out, because before and after the incredibly boring and WAY too long camping scenes, a lot IS happening in this movie. There's romance, action, intrigue, espionage, pathos, and political allusions...but then they get that damn locket and the movie comes to a screeching halt until it's gone.
- Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. This one is unique because TONS of stuff happens in this movie, but it's all meaningless because the story makes no sense and nothing is accomplished. It's literally sound and fury signifying nothing. Couple this with completely unlikable characters and a mean-spirited tone, and the whole thing becomes unbearable.
- Any later career Robert Redford movie. Bagger Vance? Spy Game? Lions for Lambs? I have literally fallen asleep during all three of these movies. Pretentious twaddle all of them.

What's the most boring movie YOU ever saw?

Deathly Hallows Part 1: For a different reason, it seemed to me that they mixed up the scenes that were meant for the cutting room floor and two scenes that they didn't plan to cut.

(Spoiler)The start scene and the end scene were good but they seemed to pick the most boring bits, they didn't even put in the planning of the break in and they messed up the scene with Kretcher too.

Check, check, and double check.

Okay, so somebody did win an Olympic medal. BOOOR-ing! I would have slept through it were it not for the horrid soundtrack, which was too loud at any number of decibels.

The Libertine - In theory, it could have been awesome because it's a period film that has Johnny Depp in it. I love period films and I love Johnny Depp, so how could it go wrong? It went wrong by being boring. I tried to watch it at least four or five times, but wound up turning it off each time around the first hour because it didn't hold my interest. The characters weren't very likable; not even Johnny's. A film that was supposed to be a biopic about a revolutionary writer was instead just a film about characters doing everyday things in 16th century England. If you want a more engaging film about a revolutionary writer, check out Quills starring Geoffrey Rush.

Dead Man - As much as it pains me to say I didn't like yet another Johnny Depp film, well, this one was pretty boring too. Granted, I didn't sit through the whole thing, but that's because the first 45 minutes bored me to death. It was just Johnny Depp running around trying to find the employer who sent for him. I've heard several people say this is one of Johnny's better films, but I was too impatient for the pace to pick up.

I know this is blasphemy, but Inception. I left the theater after the first half. Bored me to tears.

Many films, good or bad, do have the potential to bore me at times. I can't think about any film that I have watched voluntarily that I was bored to tears with.

But there is one book that bored me almost to tears, although I kept reading it for a bet. Atlas Shrugged. I can't see how that could be turned into a remotely interesting film. Even Dickens' Bleak House and Dumas' The Count of Monte-Cristo, as hard to read as they were and tedious, were ultimately rewarding, despite the waffle.

Rocky. I don't know how the heck I managed to make it through the whole thing. Maybe I should get a medal or something.

I would watch anything that had to do with the space program, but when I tried to watch The Right Stuff I was bored to tears. Saw, Hostel, and most slasher flicks are pretty boring unless they create twists and suspense. Period pieces are hard to draw me in, but I can't think of a specific example right now.

I really like most of Andri Tarkovsy's films despite their slow pace and long running times. It took me three or four viewings before I could stay awake through "Nostalghia". But even with their slow pace, at least there is an idea behind the films and that makes them interesting.

But I have tried to watch "Damnation" by Bela Tarr a few times and I just can't get past the first half hour.

My grandmother, uncle and I are probably the only ones in the family that like 2001: A Space Odyssey.

I know I'll probably get a lot of people who disagree with these, but... Any James Bond movie. Even the spoof, Casino Royale (much older of course than the recent and successful movie of the same name), with David Niven has been too much for me to sit through. It's the same old thing every time... Mr. Wonderful, gadgets, sex (I prefer having it to watching it, thanks... same goes for the gadgets) and oh-no-you-didn't from someone in charge at some point, I think... I dunno, never made it through one. I also prefer the reluctant or half baked hero... Marty McFly or Spiderman.

Nah, you're not alone. I don't really like any of the James Bond movies either. It really is the same thing over and over again. And Casino Royale was a boring, nonsensical comedy.

The second Twilight film was boring and thoroughly unlikeable. I found Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince really dull too, but maybe because the book was so exciting and I'd built too much expectation up in my head.

Marie Antoinette by Sophia Coppola I just didn't get on with either. It looked exquisite, the soundtrack was amazing and the acting was great but literally nothing. Ever. Happened. First film is ages that I actually gave up on halfway through.

OK, I have some important announcements to make.
The Room is not boring. The Room is the mind blowing.
Clearly, none of you have ever seen Gerry (which I think is excellent, btw).
And though it probably deviates from the mainstream too much to count, it must be that none of you have heard of Empire, or Sleep. Or Eat. Or whatever.

Thank you.
