How many of you have cable, and have the EAS Alert Transmission System? I don't like the ugly noise. How many of you hate that noise?

I hate TV alert systems. That noise really is one of my pet-peeves. I either have to mute the television or just change the channel. :?

Er, I don't really know what that is, and Google wasn't being particularly helpful. What exactly is it?

EAS is an alert with an ugly noise to alert people for emergencies, and they test it very often.

Is it sort of like this thing? I think it's kind of a cool sound.

EAS is the Emergency Alert System. It's designed mainly for the president to warn US citizens of a national emergency (no political comments, please). It's used locally for weather emergencies like flood warnings, and AMBER alerts (child abductions). So while annoying, it can be really useful.

Each radio or TV station is required by the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) to test their EAS equipment on-air at a random time once a week ("this is ony a test"). A monthly test takes the place of one weekly test, and that's also done at a random time.

And if you think the EAS tones are annoying, try finding a file of the old EBS tones to listen to!

If you think the EAS system sounds are annoying, you should hear the pager tones used by the various local emerency personel (fire, police, ambulance). My step-mothers current husband has 3 scanners on 24 hours a day at full volume and where they live, the tones are tested daily at 6pm. All I have to say is that I am glad I am a visitor and not a resident. I would go bonkers having to listen to that every single day.

I don't know why they have to test it so often. If they ever did use it for a real emergency, I'd ignore it... they "cry wolf" too much.

Actually, the system is tested here in conjuctions with the tornado siren warnings. The idea is to make sure things are working (although even the weekly tests do not ensure that the sirens/warning systems are working as needed).

I dont really care much for the tones either, but I have become somewhat used to it. I listen to the local PD and FD and have for many years, they have some very interesting and annoying tones. Not to mention some people dont know how to talk into a mic...

But anyway, the EAS tones are quite annoying.

Try playing "Silent Hill". You'll never hear an air-raid siren the same way again!! !
