don't they realize that if they actually set out to make a GOOD movie, they would actually make more money than making a BAD movie just for a quick buck?

Ahh ... but making ten bad movies for the price of one good movie means more profit. It's the same philosophy as the automobile and fast-food industries - sell crap, lots of crap, and make more money than with a limited number of quality products.

Sadly, the power to make the studios see that lies in the hands of the average movie-goer. As long as people are content to pay to see giant robots destroy each other and everything in sight (including the plot and coherent acting and storylines), we'll keep seeing the studios putting them out.

I think of it as investing. Hollywood keeps doing the safe low risk movies.

To be fair attempting something better can be a high risk as far as profits go. Strangely the movie that result from this are more likely to become Cult films.

An interesting example is Fight Club. A good unique movie that flopped at the cinema mostly because of terrible marketing campaign. They took a chance on it then couldn't figure out how to sell it. Overtime though the movie sold it self and became very popular on video.

In the NT world, people tend to try to do what makes them the most money with the smallest effort possible. In most cases, when NT's choose a career, they pick something that they are vaguely interested in but which they think will bring in lots of money. Rather than really enjoying a job, most NT's are simply in it for the money. Why should movie producers spend the extra time to make a good movie when they will get a higher reward/effort by producing crappy movies?

They do what the public wants, not the minority. They want to satisfy the majority, not the minority. The majority is what gives them the Benjamins

I dont know but however hollywood works its crap! Hollywoods main objective is to make money not to be artistic ,innovative or make good films. However to be fair there will always be excellent directors like nolan and aronosky. but then again you have so many terrible directors out there. Its like a brain drain and an insult to aspiring or would be directors to see movies like 'Disaster movie' being made

All that I can add is a trite cliche' ... "If you're not part of the solution, then you're part of the problem".

Either make better movies than Hollywood, see only the best movies from Hollywood, or go someplace else where better movies are made.

No, they're not stupid. They know that by appealing to the lowest common denominator, they will attract the widest audience possible. Usually that means dumbing things down for children, because children don't listen to film critics and will enjoy really stupid movies, or by appealing to the fanbase of a property that already exists.

Not all film companies are like that, though--just the Big Six (Disney, Fox, Universal, Sony, WB, Paramount). The smaller studios that are still growing tend to make better movies. Because the Big Six control about 86% of the market and release the most movies, we now have more bad movies than ever before.

It depends on what you like. Some cult favorites might be what you consider making a bad movie.

To quote a film critic regarding Hollywood movies: "there's only three types of movies, movies where nothing gets blowed up, movies where some stuff gets blowed up, and movies where everything gets blowed up real GOOD."

I think that pretty well sums it up. If you want to see cinema, go see films made outside of the USA. If you want to see more of the same, see movies made in Hollywood, which reminds me of one of my favorite topics, "Films That are Totally Inaccurate Historically."

It's hard to say what single brand this PC might be ... what with all its diverse parts and wire-wrapped interface module ...

Hollywood is run by business men, not artists.

That's why it's called "Show Business", not "Show Art".
