I think I'd have to go with the original, but I liked the Burton sequel a lot too. At first I didn't think the Alice in the new film was "right" for the part, but by the end of the movie I thought she was perfect...which I suppose is kind of in line with the plot if you think about it.

I like the original Disney version better.

The Disney version is actually parts of the two original books, Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.
I didn't really like Burton's version, but I may have liked it better if I had been prepared for the broad artistic license he was going to take. As it was, it just felt glaring and wrong.

Very true. I went into that movie wanting to like it SO badly, but I just couldn't. I'd really like to see his take on the original story.

Haven't seen the Disney version since I was a kid, but vaguely remember liking it a lot. I thought the Burton one was fun. Like all Burton's movies, the plot sort of gets lost for the imagery and the spectacle.

The Disney version is cute and all, but my favorite is Burton's version. It's been my main obsession/special interest ever since I saw it in theaters last year.

The two Alice books have been made into a movie - Alice in Wonderland - with Natalie Gregory as Alice and featuring many of Hollywood's biggest names including Red Buttons, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Lloyd Bridges. Songs by Steve Allen.

I seem to remember the BBC made a version for TV, I know I've seen a soft-porn version back in the 70s, and I'm sure there's at least one black and white version...;)

There is no ORIGINAL version.
The story has been remade numerous times.
One of the rather bizarre versions was made back in the 1930's with Hollywood stars. It featured none other than W.C. Fields as Humpty Dumpty. (I kid you not.) Another interesting version was an animated musical produced by the company who did the Flintstones. Barney and Fred turned up in it as did other characters they owned.

Interesting fact regarding the Disney version. Back in the nasty Sixties and Seventies it was kept in the vaults. The feeling at the Disney company was that people would read too much into it as far as drug references. I distinctly remember reading an article in the early seventies saying that they were considering never re-releasing it. So when they finally did in about 1980 a friend and I got good and stoned and went to see it and laughed ourselves silly. There was a sad scene where the eyeglass birds were crying with Alice and we were the only ones in the entire theater laughing...

Ah yes, the good old days ....

The Disney version, it's got more of a nostalgic feel to it. And I was kind of obsessed with impersonating the mushroom eating scenes when I was a little kid, I broke biscuits then ate a piece and stood up pretending to grow huge.

The Burton version started off really good and then became too Lord of The Rings. I made my friend in the theater laugh when I said during the battle "Mr. Frodo NOOO!"
