What movies keep you engaged?

I like action films, but I haven't felt impressed by anything recently. I am worn out on the injection of poor CGI into films, and I am repulsed from seeing some films if I recognize it in their trailers. I am not interested in the likes of "Resident Evil," which I find an ironic twist from the legacy of Shinji Mikami's games. That is what I enjoyed about Inception, despite its other failings. The best scene was entirely mechanical. I do find fast paced films exhilarating, and I like even being challenged by the pace of action, for which some might say "I couldn't keep up with it." Quantum of Solace is a good example I think. The opening scene was visually blistering. I simply prefer that those moments don't come at the expense of other details.

Contrastingly, two favorite English language films that are exemplary of my taste are "The Good Shepherd" and "The Thin Red Line." Most people I speak to hate these films because they were "too slow," and I wish I could see more films like "The Good Shepherd" with very fine detail and slower, more gradual exposition. The first film I really connected with was Michael Mann's "Heat." It was a bit overwhelming.

I think I prefer a mix of action and drama.

I like fantasy movies such as Alice in Wonderland (2010), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), and Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride (I'm a big Tim Burton fan, can't you tell?), the film adaptation of Hogfather, The Princess Bride and Labyrinth.

I also enjoy dark movies such as Sweeney Todd (again, a Burton film), Willard, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, The Crow, Heathers, A Clockwork Orange, American Psycho and Fight Club.

I also really like The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Repo! The Genetic Opera (not sure how to categorize them though).

I downloaded this once, but I didn't watch it. I am less interested in modern Western musicals than other performance arts, although I like classical or traditional opera such as Bizet and Puccini.

DARK CITY
INCEPTION
STAR TREK (2009)
THE GAME
VANILLA SKY
HEATHERS
SECRETARY
THE A-TEAM
TRON: LEGACY
IDIOCRACY
CLICK

So, that comes down to: action if it's done intelligently and with character development; dark sci-fi/fantasy that keeps you guessing; psychological drama; dark comedy.

Documentaries. Though I prefer to read. I can read much faster than it takes for somebody to tell me something

+1

I am engaged most by that which is either dark or twisted. So Inception, Fight Club, Sweeney Todd are all good choices. A little lighter would be flicks like
Mary and Max
Jeux D'Enfants,
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Boondock Saints
Original Sin

I think my favorite genre is Dark Comedy such as movies that poke fun of life, world events, and our American culture with cynical humor and sarcasm. Some of my favorites include Addams Family Values, Bride of Chucky, and Mini's First Time.

I love it when they touch sensitive subjects that shock some viewers but make people like me laugh because we know they're true and it's pointless to hide them from the world. Things like the corruption of the government and how rich people are able to get away with pretty much anything, the fact that humans are slowly destroying the earth yet don't really give a crap, and how sociopaths and master manipulators exists everywhere and their victims are too clueless to defend themselves which is strangely kind of funny (in a twisted way of course).

However with that said, I believe there are some lines you never cross and Dark Comedies shouldn't make light of. Things like pedophillia, sadism (and I mean real sadism, not the S&M fetish), and poking fun at individuals who have been victimized when they didn't deserve it. Modern Vampires and Family Guy are good examples of this which is why I don't care much for them.

War movies, not massive exagerations like Rambo, but We Were Soldiers, Black Hawk Down, and the Hurt Locker. I've also like some of the recent alien movies like Battle Los Angeles and last year's District 9. D-9 is an amazing movie, considering it's got aliens in it.

I love (good) horror flicks, and (good) scifi. Documentaries keep my attention if I find the subject interesting - such as concerning history, anthropology, etc. But I especially love movies that make you think, such as The Usual Suspects, and L.A. Confidential.

I absolutely LOVE genre films (i.e. Action, Sci-Fi, Comedy, Horror). I can watch those over and over without fail. I also watch more "serious" films, but I typically rewatch them less frequently.

Mindless action. War, destruction, blood, death and most important of all Revenge and Victory.

I love war movies (especially when the Allies win) and I love watching the Military Channel. War is the thing that humans do best.

If you like LGBT love stories, then I'd like to recommend Wilde. It's a biopic about Oscar Wilde that especially focuses on his relationship with Alfred "Bosie" Douglas. And Oscar is played by Stephen Fry, so that's a huge plus.

If you'd like something a little more offbeat, I suggest Creatures from the Pink Lagoon. It's about 5 or 6 gay men who are on vacation at a lake and get attacked by zombies. It's hilarious, and the romance is sweet.
