its the music that Billy Murray/Thompson plays on his hifi at about 5 mins into the film, just before he reminisces about lazlo.
the only lyrics i can make out due to the sound quality are "it's the american way" - before it goes into a guitar solo

No clue, but here's a YouTube link to the first ten minutes of the movie so people can hear it. The song starts at about 5:12.

The film's Wikipedia article says that the original music was "replaced by generic approximations of the original songs" for the home video version, aside from one Creedence Clearwater Revival song, so it may very well not be a song from a known artist.
