I went to see "Drive" today and the film was awful. Not the story(I only saw the first 20 minutes or so) but the equipment used to show it. I went to a theater that still uses a celluloid projector and the lamp was about to blow out. It kept flickering and it looked to me like a strobe light. I had to walk out because I was getting a headache. The fun part was when I walked up to the ticket counter, I got my money back no questions asked. Which seems to imply they know the lamp is about to take a dump and the don't care.(I understand customer service but why not at least ask why I wasn't happy?) From now on if I see a movie, it will be on a digital projection system.

I think that all movie cinemas have a policy where if you leave within 1/2 hour of the movie's start - you can get a refund if you leave.

They may not bother asking because some people would go on and on and complain about what specifically bothered them. Often the issues are the amount of swearing, violence or the mood of the film. These would not be things that the cinema staff can do much about. I almost walked out of a movie because it didn't appear particularly funny (although billed as a laugh-out-loud comedy) - it was the particularly dismal "Observe and Report" with Seth Rogen (who I usually quite enjoy in films). I wish I had gotten a refund as I pretty much realized it was not my type of movie very early into it. If I had left and gotten a refund - my lack of enjoyment of the film would not be something that the cinema staff could really help and they don't need me to blather on why it is such a bad movie (that's what imdb is for LOL).

If you want, write a short note to the cinema, explaining why you needed to leave. Include the date, showing time and movie title. This is one of those rare instances when the cinema manager can actually take action to improve things.

I've honestly never walked out of a movie in my entire life. I don't even like getting up to go to the bathroom, not even during bad movies. Seriously, I sat through all of The Last Airbender for crying out loud. I have several reasons for doing so:
1) I'm just curious to see if there are any good parts that might redeem a lousy film.
2) If I leave the theater, what else will I do for the next hour or so?
3) I spent my money, so I feel obligated to spend my time.
4) I sort of feel guilty walking out on a movie, no matter how bad it is. Actually, I feel that way about walking out on anything really (a conversation, a performance, etc.) Maybe I'm just too polite for my own good.

I have only left a movie in a theater once, not because it was a terrible movie (even though it was), but because I was getting sick to my stomach from watching it. (It was actually almost over.)

Jumper, starring Hayden Christensen.

You're braver than I am. When I saw The Last Airbender in the theater, I walked out halfway because it was so boring. Then again, I hadn't really gotten into the series at that point; when I rewatched the film on DVD after watching the first season of the series, that's when I truly hated it.

Other than that, I've only walked out of two other movies: Sherlock Holmes (not because the film was bad, but because I felt very uncomfortable in the theater as I was watching it) and Vampires Suck (which I only saw because I wanted to do an observation of the other suckers who paid to see it - if you have a deviantART account, you can read my findings here).
