when those mutant thugs took the baby hostage, did batman SHOOT that thug, and said "i believe you"? can someone please explain this scene to me?????

I think Batman did fire at the mutant, but missed, I'm still confused by the setup of the scene as well.

Maybe I am reaching for straws, I believe Frank Miller wanted it to be ambiguous and leaving it up to the readers.

On a side note: I couldn't help but notice that this scene was used Robocop 2. With Robocop shooting against the wall causing a ricochet effect and hit the guy's head. Of course Frank Miller also was instrumental in the scripts for the second and third films.

In the first movie, Robocop smashed through the wall to apprehend the crazed hostage holder.
