"The film was based loosely on the real-life story of a young runner named Bae Hyong-Jin. Bae worked part-time on an assembly line in a tool factory when, at the age of seventeen, he ran a marathon in Chuncheon, Korea, in 2 hours 57 minutes. While not anywhere near elite runner times, which are under 2 hours 8 minutes, Bae's time was enough to earn him national recognition. Why? Because Bae Hyong-Jin has autism.
But the film is not about running. It's about the complexity of autism as a disorder and the problems people with autism confront in their family and social lives. It is one of the most realistic and compelling cinematic representations of autism that I've ever seen." -- Richard Grinker Unstrange Minds

I was reading Unstrange Minds (wonderful book on autism) yesterday and came upon this reference of a korean film called "Malaton". I tried to find a video clip online to get a taste of the film and found one:

I watched a little bit of it and I'm intrigued so far. I'm going to try to find it on the interlibrary loan system :chin:

I've watched it all the way through. It's brilliant :) It's a really good portrayal, although that might have something to do with the fact that it's based on a real person... Not sure really...

I like the fact that his trainer actually does the whole number thing with him. I was thinking, 'oh here we go again... he's going to answer it perfectly, portrayal ruined... but then he doesn't! It's so good! Very sad, emotional and sweet.

Also I love the Korean writing/language so it interested me from that point of view as well.

Both videos posted have already been taken down by somebody. I am finding it really difficult to find this movie, even to BUY it. Here is some info I have gathered so far. Please help us find it.

Yoon-cheol, Jeong. Malaton. 2005. Documentary. South Korea.
Fictionalized story based upon a real marathon runner with autism. Grinker, author of Unstrange Minds says it is one of the most realistic and compelling films about a person with autism.
*English titles, “Marathon” or “Running Boy”.
*Video available (somewhere) on DVD. Has been posted on You Tube and other sites, but later taken down.
*Review on Asian Movie Web: http://www.asianmovieweb.com/en/reviews/marathon.htm
*Wikipedia article: Malaton (2005) Article on Wikipedia
*Wikipedia article entire link text: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marathon_(2005_film)
*Info about a 3-disk version with commentary and English sub-titles, difficult to find: http://www.yesasia.com/global/100412228 ... /info.html
