The Hobbit was the one movie I anticipated on seeing all year! After how great the original Lord of the Rings Trilogy was, this movie has to be great. Peter Jackson is the director again after all. There were people camping out for tickets days before opening night and it was crazy! There was rumor that Samuel L Jackson begged Peter Jackson to play a role in this film, and I think he got casted as the elf king or something...
Anyways, I was pumped to see Lord of the Rings Episode I - The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. I'm sure you're all familiar with the original story. It starts out where the wizard Gandalf (played by Ian McKellen) and Thorin Oakenshield (played by Liam Neeson) go and try to negotiate with the Goblin Federation to release the blockade on the dwarven kingdom upon Lonely Mountain. The goblins refuse and they attack Gandalf and Thorin, who escape with 12 other dwarves. One of the dwarves is named Dori, who speaks with this high-pitched Italian sort-of accent. They all end up in Hobbiton, where they meet this 9-year old boy...erm...hobbit named Bilbo Baggins, who is a slave to mediocracy but is also a racer. Thorin and Gandalf think the hobbit is the "chosen one" because he holds the RING OF POWER. There's an elf princess character who is apparently supposed to be important to the story. I think she's played by Kate from that show Lost, and her and Bilbo have an apparent love connection. A bunch of other stuff happens, like they end up meeting Gollum, who is the only one that knows of Bilbo's true destiny. There's a big war at the end between men, elves, dwarves, goblins, and droids. While that's taking place, Gandalf and Thorin meet up with the dragon Smaug, who is the Dark Lord Sauron's apprentice. They engage in an epic sword battle. Thorin dies, but Gandalf prevails and kills Smaug. At the end, Gandalf agrees to be the one to teach Bilbo about the ring, leaving the movie on a huge cliffhanger...
So, great movie. Can't wait for Episode II to come out!
