TV show Glee and Asperger's

Does anyone hear watch the TV show "Glee"? Normally, I don't, but I happened to catch a little bit of it on Fox last night with my father, and there was this girl who came into the gym for an audition, and she said that because she has Asperger's (self-diagnosed), she could do and say whatever she wanted, "like a diplomat's daughter." I didn't see the whole episode, but I still feel it was offensive to those of us who were clinically diagnosed. Sorry I don't have a clip, but I don't know how to post them. Whoever writes for the show obviously did not realize that people with Asperger's are not intentionally rude, but that they say things that might be considered rude without realizing it. It is NOT an excuse to be obnoxious. What do you guys think?

I think the intention was to pick on the people who use asperger's as an excuse. From what I've seen in the last few years on the net is that it's really popular to believe people with asperger's are using it as an excuse, especially people who do not have a diagnosis. So basically, the character you saw (who is not a regular on the show) was supposed to be believed to be a spoiled brat who claims to have asperger's to get her way and to excuse bratty behavior. You were supposed to find this funny because this supposedly happens all the time. I didn't find it funny at all, but I'm sure much of Glee's audience did.

I dislike "Glee" a lot. I tried to watch it a couple of times because a lot of people "love" the show. I just wanted to understand why. I dont. I think the whole premise is make "different" people (nerds, fats, people with dissabilities, et al.) feel good about themselves, but somehow I find it exploitive and offensive.

I saw the whole episode. I've actually always liked Glee, until last night really.

I think it's right that they were trying to show how people use Asperger's as an excuse, but it was still offensive to me the way they did it. And it's passing along some bad jokes and stereotypes...from looking at the stuff tagged for #Glee #Aspergers on Twitter, it seems like everyone is treating Asperger's like a big joke, not a real disability.

I don't have a an official diagnosis, so I suppose that makes me sorta-self-diagnosed...But I don't go around telling everyone and using it as an excuse to be rude (my mom and two of my good friends know that I think I'm on the autism spectrum, and that's all).

The Glee club kind of reminds me of my own group of friends from high school (a mish-mash of interesting and different people), so I kind of connect to the show some, but that episode destroyed that connection.

I've been incensed by "Glee" several times, but this wasn't one of them. I actually found it really funny.

Believe you me, a lot of people claim to have "self-diagnosed Aspergers," and they DO use it as a flimsy excuse for bad manners. Sugratits, or whatever her name is, was supposed to be a character that you hated - for taking advantage of the very real suffering of people with aspergers.

It's true, people really do think this is a fake disorder. I know their intention was to make fun of people who use the label as a excuse, but it was in bad taste. Aspergers stereotype is already bad enough with people confusing AS/HFA with Sociopaths/Psychopaths. Now this. I smh at you Glee. u___u

1) The principal telling Tina that she couldn't wear goth clothes (a very WTF plot)
2) The mangling of "True Colors" AND subsequently making the contestants on "The Glee Project" sing it wrong too
3) Not only did they have the shamelessness to perform "Friday," they somehow managed to make it sound worse.
4) Becky saying that most of the New Directions kids can't sing in "Funeral" (I hate pretty much everything Backy does but that was the worst)
5) The Bieber episode - Vapid, pandery, you know you've got a problem when Finn, Lauren, and Sue Sylvester are the voices of reason.
6) Rachel and Idina Menzel performing Poker Face - The song she chooses to sing with her long-lost mother is a non-showtune written 2 years ago laced with sexual innuendo?
7) The fact that anyone took Sue seriously in "Throwdown" when she made that "elite club" and that that episode was passed off as a serious lesson on racism.
8) Sue getting no comeuppance for pushing a guy down the stairs
9) The princiapl missing that OBVIOUS loophole regarding the cannon "You can't fire anyone out of that cannon wihtout their consent" Because Sue Sylvester would NEVER resort to coercion (/sarcasm).
10) The deaf choir becoming comic relief

People with Downs Syndrome have more reason to be upset - if you thought Sugar got away with a lot using her disability as an excuse, just look at how many terrible things Becky does.

I have to admit, I love GLEE.

The difference I've noticed between the Asperger's thing and other Glee things though is that with other things (like Tina dressing goth or Kurt just being a homosexual) the Glee club stands up for those people. It's presented in a way where the group of misfits rallies behind them whereas this time the misfit is dismissed by Glee club too. So even the losers treat this girl as a loser. There's no explanation at all that Asperger's isn't about being a brat.
