It's a movie adapted from a book by Graham Green, and throughout I had the impression (conviction, even) that this is the guy who wrote the controversial Lolita novel (and as such, I was actually trying to see whether there's any ideas remotely similar) - realized it's because of Donnie Darko, where one 'teacher' proclaimed incorrectly that it's written by him.
Damn Donnie Darko!
