I'm sure this has been done a thousand times over, but I can't find any recent threads on it, so I thought I'd start my own.

So, what do you think?

I say The Simpsons. I've laughed at some of Family Guy's gags, but I find I can relate to a lot of the Simpsons scenarios, and (at least for a time), it didn't go out of it's way in absurdity, as I think Family Guy does.

The Simpson's are the best. They're funny, clever and have alot more famliy friendly value's than Famliy Guy.

Hard to say.

The Simpsons at its peak > Family Guy at its peak.

The Simpsons now < Family Guy now.

Sipping raw sewage through a straw > The Cleveland Show.

Considering the fact that both shows have passed the point where they were at their funniest, I'm going with the Simpsons since they'll be the ones people remember 20-30 years from now regarding prime time animated sitcoms.

They're both equally good, but I chose the Simpsons due to seniority.

The Simpsons. It's funnier, friendlier and more family oriented. And it has storylines.

I'm a fan of both shows but I will say The Simpsons is my favourite of the two. I will say though that the Family Guy episodes now are better than The Simpsons episodes now.

I'd say at it's peak, Family Guy was better than Simpsons. But over-all I'd say Simpsons wins out. Family Guy hit huge huge fame on it's first run and in syndication and timing of TV-DVD fame but when it came back in after cancelling it was stale and has been since. It's the same thing over and over and over again. They've not done anything new since like the second season, watch their first ~30 episodes and you'll have seen everything else they've ever done since. The unfortunate side-effect of the shows humor style. That's not to say it's not funny because it's still is. It's like seeing a guy get kicked in the balls, it will always be great crass humor, but in the end, no matter how many different ways you do it, it's still the same thing =P.

So ya, again, while Simpsons height of fame never reached Family Guy height of fame Simpsons still gets my vote for the length and over-all and unquestionably vastly superior writing.

In the end though neither can hold a candle to Futurama, so it's a moot point from the get go =P

YEAH! :D Futurama is the best! Simpsons had a good run, and Family Guy used to be funny as f**k but got downright stupid, but Futurama is KING!

I find it hard to choose between the two. I love Family Guy because of the delicously cynical jokes the show does about everything and everyone, but The Simpsons has a bit more heart to it and potrays very human characters.

I guess The Simpsons has the best potrayel of purely human characters with good points and laughable flaws, while Family Guy's characters are completely abysmal in a twisted potrayel of American culture.

I chose The Simpsons, even though I LOVE Family Guy. The first ten seasons of the Simpsons, it was top of its game. It maintained its quality for a very long time. It developed from a perfectly good animated social commentary on American society to a very sharp, witty show that was also tackling global issues and pop culture left and right in every episode. And it often featured a sentimental element that made up for some of the sarcasm in the show, just to remind us that, though animated, this was also still a family sitcom. It was in great balance.

I'm unable to compare recent episodes of Simpsons to Family Guy, because I haven't seen recent episodes of Simpsons. This is because the latest seasons of The Simpsons I saw (around 2002-ish) just didn't do it for me at all. So I'm afraid I'd just be disappointed, because I'm not hearing that it's gotten better since.

Family Guy, on the other hand, never got to the point for me where I stopped enjoying it. It's always good for a quick laugh with a bag of crisps, even thoiugh I acknowledge there are some things in it that cross a certain line of good taste.
