I saw the Promethues DVD in the store the other day and had a quick look at the cover. But I put it down again thinking: "Most people said it was crap."

I think I will wait for a really boring day to go and buy it or rent it. Or maybe I will watch it on youtube one day!

Was it really the blockbuster it was made out to be?

It's at least worth a rental. Maybe read a variety of reviews to see what people liked about it or why some hated it.

Many complain it didn't explain anything.

Visually, it was stunning and slightly entertaining, but not the ground-breaking sci-fi it was made out to be. Still, it's worth your time if you can stomach Noomi Rapace performing a self-cesarean on herself.

The sets and effects were outstanding.
The story was pure crap.

I thought that it was a really good movie. The android, David, really made the movie for me...I thought that the guy who played him was absolutely amazing in the movie. That said, the movie could have done a lot more than it did, and I was disappointed that it didn't, but that didn't make it less enjoyable.

Rent it, and decide if it's crap or not for yourself.
I think even the movie's defenders will admit, it still can't hold a candle to the original Alien, which it's supposed to explain the origins of. But then again, few movies can hold a candle to Alien, including it's sequels.

From personal experience, the only one who can decide whether or not a movie is good is your own self. For example, the critics trashed Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, Albert Nobbs and Restless, but I think those are excellent movies. On the other hand, the critics loved Frankenweenie and The Kids Are All Right, but I did not enjoy those movies.

I think the movie actually has much in common with the original ALIEN. The issue is that it was marketed as something more. It is served up to the audience with ideas about the origin of life and the mystery of who the Engineer/SpaceJockey was.

It does not explain these things, just as ALIEN did not explain what the alien was, where it came from, or why that alien ship crashed there full of eggs and facehuggers.

I'm tempted to say don't expect a plot much better then EVENT HORIZON, but do expect a very polished visual film.

I suppose that could be said about any big blockbuster these days?

Alien is my favorite film and so I am concerned about watching Promethues because I think it might ruin the Alien film for me. One big problem I have is this idea that the events of Promethues occur about 30 years before the events in Alien! That would piss me off because what I loved in Alien was the notion that the space jockey and the alien ship were possibly thousands or even millions of years old when Dallas, Kane, and Lambert found it.

Yes and no? It ruins alien or does not ruin alien?

I think he means yes to the events of Prometheus taking place years before the events of Alien, and no to the alien ship being hundreds of years old when Dallas, Kane and Lambert found it.

Well in that case Alien is ruined for me so I will not watch Promethues
