I've read it's religious-based so I'm keeping my distance. Probably like one of those fantastic L. Ron Hubbard movies they used to show in Times Square to suck people into Scientology. I'm not fooled.

Don't be silly! The film is based on a book, wherein one part the main character decides to practice three major religions (Hinduism, Christianity and Islam) at the same time, and gets himself into a bit of a tiffle. It's really not preachy at all and as somebody who's entirely non-religious, I found this part fascinating. I'm not sure how it will be portrayed in the film, however.

I was thinking of seeing this film on the weekend. It's not usually my type of film especially if it's Ang Lee. But seeing the trailers and knowing the story is about a boy and a tiger lost at sea does sound a little like my type of film. I mostly wanna see the movie for probably the 3D because seeing that whale jump would be cool in 3D and maybe worth the money though I would love to see a good story as well. I mean if it's about a boy and a tiger it might be good and I hope they do a strong bond type of relationship becaue I kinda thing. If I do go to see it I'll probably be hesitant but who knows if I take my chance I'll probably end up enjoying this.

I saw Life of Pi a few weeks ago.

The 3D was amazing and who cares if a relatively unknown cast starred in Life of Pi?
It's the perfomances that count in a movie, not who's starring in a movie.

See it just for the backgrounds they are just that good. I loved it and yes some of it is a little preachy but I felt it just added to the story.

Well after actually seeing the film I feel I have to revise my earlier statement about it not being overly preachy. While religion in the book was just one part of a greater story, intertwining with the narrative and never seeming out of place, the film made it the central focus, and was not subtle about it at all. Much of the dialogue feels forced and fake, though I get the feeling it's meant to be profound and moving. Many moments are dramatic to the point of comedy with a soundtrack that I assume is intended to tug at ones heart strings, but instead is the cheesy topping on a very corny cake. If you can look past all this there is a fun adventure movie lurking underneath, but it's hardly the great work of art I thought this book deserved.

Wow. I was interested in the movie to but had heard similar comments. I had thought Ang Lee might put together something interesting but maybe this one isn't for me.

I'm not so sure if I wanna see the movie anymore, at least not on the big screen maybe I'll wait for the DVD. Now that I think of it it isn't really my type of movie. I mean I like those type of movies where a boy bonds with his pet or alien or something else but despite the reviews I still don't know if I wanna pay to see this movie. I mean it would look cool to see some of those special effects in 3D like the whale jumping but hey if I wanna see a cgi whale in 3D I'll go see Finding Nemo when it's re- released in 3D. I guess I would still like to see this movie when it comes out on dvd so I dunno yet. Monsters Inc 3D comes out in 2 weeks time and I would love to see it even though I've seen it many times in the past and have it on dvd but seeing a film I already have on the big screen is something that I'd usually like to do because it's kinda cool.

I can't say enough how much I enjoyed this movie. I found it interesting, humorous, and heartwarming. I don't want to spoil the plot, so I'll just say that it really gets you thinking.

I just got back from the cinema, the movie is really great, as well as special effects. Movie is very touching especially the ending., which I will not tell here, so as not to spoil the pleasure of watching these people who have not seen movie yet.
I can only say that it was very philosophical.

I have seen it. I did not enjoy the story very much, partly because I found it preachy and cliched. However, some of the scenes were visually stunning.

@Ruckus - Thanks for clearing that up. Now I know I won't go and see it. 3D and flying whales don't impress me one bit, and if I wanted to be preached to, I'd go to church.

I don't know how the movie portrays the story, but I read the book, and in my opinion it's not quite so simple.

When it comes to the issue of whether religion is true, the book ends up being on the side of the atheists. I don't want to go into details, but the overall message seems to be that religion is a comfort to people who cannot face up to the truth. On the other hand, the book is quite sympathetic to this idea, and does not judge people for their decision to escape from reality.

I have not read book, but the movie does not seem to support atheistic views, quite the contrary.

It's an interesting discussion, but I really don't want to go into details since the book sort of has a twist ending.

Speaking vaguely, the book ends up providing two possible stories to explain the data. The first story is impossible, but is a story full of hope. The second story is believable, but is a horrific tale. The book asks the question: "Which story do you prefer?" The answer given by the characters in the story is that they prefer the first story.

I took this to be representing a "sympathetic atheist" viewpoint. The second story is obviously the true one, but who could blame people for preferring the first story?
