I just read in an article that he had prostate cancer since 2006. I'm not really a fan of his work minus Gandalf and Magneto but that's still ashame. The fact that he was diagnosed in 2006 is what suprises me. I thought you would only have a few months with something like this. Does this mean that he may still have more years in his life?

Quote:
"I've had prostate cancer for six or seven years. When you have got it you monitor it and you have to be careful it doesn't spread. But if it is contained in the prostate it's no big deal. Many, many men die from it but it's one of the cancers that is totally treatable. I am examined regularly and it's just contained, it's not spreading. I've not had any treatment."

Do not panic. It's only cancer.

I find your comment stupid and even quite insulting - even if you did not mean it that way. When you once have a cancer, it is like a bet in the lottery - you can survive, or you won´t. It also depends on the type od cancer you have. The one that Patrick Swayze had gives you once 10-20 percent chance of survival. He dies. But Michael C. Hall who plays Dexter had Hodgkins lymphoma, which has only (I dunno) like 30 percent chance of survival? And he is still alive. In a remission. You CAN survive cancer. Sometimes.

Sorry about that I was just asking I meant no offence. I'm no doctor or scientist you know. What do I know about cancer?

As cancers go Prostate Cancer is treatable and relatively slow to metastasize. While it is a serious matter it is much less lethal than lung cancer, stomach cancer or cancer of the brain.

Understandable, so no worries. Some cancers are extremely virulent, yet treatable if caught in time. Some cancers are practically "invisible", and can remain hidden for years - or even decades - before the person with the disease notices that something is not quite right.

As Ruveyn said, prostate cancer is slow to grow and spread. It is still cancer, but even cancer is no cause for panic if treated early enough. Some people seem to have strong negative reactions to even mention of the word "cancer". Those people can do more emotional damage to the cancer patient than the cold-hearted diagnosis of cancer itself. Ian McKellen seems to be handling the emotional burden very well, and his cancer is under control, so again, no worries.
