So i finally rented the movie, i found it to be the most condescending piece of crap i ever saw. An aspie getting a girl that quick?! Come on!
I also disliked how we aspies were portrayed in the movie, most of hollywood shows us as either highly unstable, ready to flip at the slightest thing, or, mentally ret*d. There was an article my local paper about a man with AS killig someone down in massachusetts, and someone mentioned aspies being "for the most part, mentally unstable"
If we continue letting society label us, it will do us no good. Look at the emo culture and the $hit they take, i should know i am partway emo.

Hollywood sucks!
(Except CSI)

I saw it a couple nights ago and it kind of grated on me, but then I read the other thread they had going about it here and I softened to it a little. I mean, yes, the characters are probably what someone who's never met a person with AS would imagine kind of simplified to a lovable romantic comedy screwup type. It's "helpful" and "enlightening" the way that Bubble Boy and Stuck On You were, but whatever, at least it teaches people what Aspergers is. It didn't stray too far outside of its capabilities besides the fact that it was pretty formless.

Those stupid motherf*ckers, could not have been more wrong than to use NTs as the role of two aspie adults who fall in love, they seemed so much more NT than aspie, in that movie, The whole movie sucked BTW.

You guys are being way too harsh on the movie. No matter who they cast/how they wrote the story, some people wouldn't like it. And remember- this is a movie-not real life, so don't expect it to perfectly mirror you or your experiences. Besides, your life with AS and mine can be very different, despite the similarities, so don't assume a movie about AS that would ring true to you would feel authentic to me, or vice-versa.

For those of you who hate it for the reasons above, its not like it was distributed to the masses in any case, or that it is well known for that matter.

I have never seen it, or heard of it until I came here. Tried looking it up on Wiki, but not a whole lot of info on it.

Actually the movie was based on two people in real life. Jerry Newport and his wife Mary.

Probably not, but I still liked the movie. How would you go about getting an accurate depiction anyway :?:

My ADHD will not allow me to watch just any movie. If the movie does not get me interested in the first few minutes I turn it off.

As for as a movie about aspergers thats not my cup of tea anyway.

I've never seen the movie, but I don't feel that it would represent all AS-AS couples.

Not perfect, but how can we expect any movie to be? There were times when the characters' obsession with their own difference was quite... What's the word? As far as their portrayal of AS / Autism is concerned, I found that it was semi-accurate, I suppose, but there was no middle ground except for "thechadmaster is full of crap", which I don't personally have enough knowledge to believe. So I just voted for yes.

I do share traits in common with both those main characters. I can safely say only that they are something like - but not quite like - me. Other than that... Well, I wouldn't know.

The big thing I didn't like was that Josh Hartnett acted more like he had ADD than Asperger's. His girlfriend did a much better job.

Now that I've actually finished the movie I think we would have been better off if Asperger's debut in hollywood had been more serious, intimate, and realistic. I still don't think the movie is that bad. I just think it's a romantic comedy, dealing with the exact same issues and in the exact same format as any other, filtered through the lens of a vague "screwed-upped-ness" that no one really has their finger on. I can picture being in a theatre during, for example, the job interview scene to hear the cheap laugh Josh Hartnett got for staring at the left hand wall while the boss is talking to him, but eye contact is an issue that some of us have serious problems with, not just some eccentricity. Steven Spielberg apparantly has AS. Maybe some day he'll give it a go.

I agree. I watched it today. I think they are making them look like some effed up weirdoes. It did help me notice something about how my eyes are possibly moving when I am looking around and thinking and drawing grids and counting and stuff, but apart from that I felt the movie was not poignant, it was crap. I even fast forwarded some of it.

My mom and I thought it was a great movie. Maybe it's because I'm mentally unstable in addition to having AS so I could relate to the characters better.
