Is the played character Dr. Spencer Reid a very intelligent Aspie? Is this character played very good?

What do you think about the tv series and Dr. Spencer Reid?

I typically enjoy the program as far as its intellectual pursuits (although they are not always very realistic) are concerned, but I do think the Spencer character tends to be over-played a bit. For example, he once said something about going to purchase a book about something and reading it, and then he said something like "Oh, that should be enough time ..." after someone else had said he only had about about ten minutes available for doing that. As an Aspie myself, I cannot imagine being so calm while planning to do something like that so quickly while working in an intense situation and even being/feeling pressured by someone else's time constraint!

At the same time, however, I can often easily identify with the way Spencer's brain works, and my wife occasionally comments about my being just like him at certain times.

sadly I cannot read as fast as he is played he can. But leet me watch a movie I realy love and dive into. Years later I can tell you details any NT would never be able to remember... and I can tell you all of the movie years later. Or leet me be just one time in a foreign persons room. I only look around once and will be able to remember every detail I saw still years later.

I realy love the show Criminal Minds and often I can identify with Reid very much very often.

I used to be like that as a kid. I could watch a movie, then recite the whole thing to friends afterward; which was at a time when I was very much crippled in social mores and could often be misconstrued as mentally ret*d. Then, as I became more socially competent in my high school, and my behavior became more "normal," I could feel that talent of mine slipping away. These days, while I can recall the story and action of a movie better than most people I know, it's nothing like what I used to be able to do.

To wit:
1. In one episode a character hints that Reid has autistic tendencies.
2. He's prone to spewing out useless information such as, "Hey, did you know, in the episode of Star Trek called the Triskelion (or something like that) the closet Scotty ever came to saying "beam me up" was actually "one to beam up" or "LA is 498.3 square miles."
3. In the Miami Santeria episode I just saw, he wears his shades a lot because the lights hurt his eyes.
4. In the same episode, while he was waiting to see the doctor, he was stimming by shaking his legs.
5. Genius IQ and eidetic memory - aspie traits.
6. Nerdiness - aspie traits
7. No fashion sense. He wears his watch on top of his sweaters, his socks don't match, and it seems like he never combs his hair.

Though I haven't seen it yet, I don't know how well he does in social situations. He's always around his teammates so they don't count because he'd already be comfortable with them.

In at least one episode, he had trouble socializing, especially with the opposite sex. I think almost all us Aspies can relate.

It is not a Reid-issue that his socks don´t match. The actor explains it in an interview: http://tvdramas.about.com/od/criminalmi ... gubint.htm

But I agree with your other points. I love Criminal Minds since I saw it the first time. My favourite character is Reid.

Interesting article. I had not known Reid's Asperger's had been officially announced.
In all honesty, though, if Reid ever succumbed to Schizophrenia, he'd probably be too much of a mental mess to be an effective criminal genius.

Boy. I am lucky. I was married at age 20. The lady that I married (now 57 years together) not only found my "weirdness" charming but she has a thing for intelligent Jewish men. So I did not have the kind of tsuris that you are referring to.

Then you truly lucked out, my friend. I had to wait till I was 35 in order to marry my own special lady who appreciated weirdo nerds.

Damn it, you covered all the points I was going to make. XD
I don't know if we're talking about the same episode or not: but there was one in which the unsub referred to "the autistic mind of Dr. Reid" - while trying to intimidate the team... I nearly fell out of my seat, I was so thrilled someone used the word "autistic" on tv! XD I thought it had become taboo or something for producers/directors. XD

As a matter of fact, I recall that line, myself. But I also don't recall the episode.

Also in the episode Dysfunction Junction (8.03) there is a young boy kidnapped who has AS. While overviewing the case and details of the family that was kidnapped they discover this fact only for Dr. Reid to spew out information on AS to which Dr. Alex Blake responds by asking if Reid has it. He blatantly avoids the question, a tactic that I often use myself.

Boy, if I had only just read the interview linked below by Matthew Gray Gubler I could've cut to the chase faster! In it he says his character has Asperger's.

Watching it now on ION TV. I love Mondays :) I do like the character of Dr Reid. I would like to have a boyfriend similar to his personality.
