I find reviews most influential when I'm considering a movie for my kids. Some are too scary for the 6-year-old, some would give the 11-year-old too many annoying quotes...
But if we're interested in a movie and there are no additional objections, we go. Sometimes it's just good to get to the theater and seeing something awful gives you even more to talk about after. Seems like there's only so much time you can spend discussing a good movie. Also, Roger Ebert, who I generally agree with, gave a bad review to "How to Train Your Dragon" and I thought it was an incredible movie. I think he had formed his opinion ahead of time, but it was far more than the usual film of its kind, and I think he was too jaded to pick up on its subtler qualities. I didn't see it in the theater, and I wish I had.
Make no mistake, though; you were spot on about "The Last Airbender." If you love the show, I strongly discourage you from seeing the film. They absolutely ruined it. They performed a charm-ectomy. All it had was drama, a rough outline of a story, and some cool martial arts and special effects. But they good stuff wasn't worth it, as much as I wanted to see a real human "bend."
