The kind of movie you might see on the Turner Classic Movies channel, what is your favorite classic movie, and why?

The Best Days of our Lives - This is a touching story of a disabled veteran coming back from war. He has incredible difficulties but his people don't turn their back on him.
Casablanca - Chock full of the best lines in moviedom. Absolute classic.
The Lost Weekend - An alcoholic man goes on a three day binge and nearly loses his mind. Ray Milland at his finest.
Marty - Another touching film, this one about an "ugly" man (Ernest Borgnine) looking for love that's escaped him his whole life.
Umberto D - This is an Italian film. Do they show these on Turner Classic Movies? They should. Very heart warming picture.
Double Indemnity - Almost forgot this one. The screenwriters sure were pretty clever back then.

OK, Casablanca. I'm a romantic at heart (even if I was an engineer). Humphrey Bogart movies in general I like, but my all time favorites are the 1950's alien/flying saucer movies. The worse they are the better I like them. Plan NIne From Outer Space is totally awsome! And Santa Claus Conquers The Martians is even better, with superb acting, outstanding script and very high tech special effects and scenery  .

Casablanca, naturally. About the best movie ever made. Along with another Bogie classic, Treasure of the Sierra Madre.

TCM has Born Yesterday On Demand, so I've watched that a couple of times lately (and about a hundred times before lately :))

I love the women's movie tearjerkers -- Kitty Foyle; Now, Voyager; Stella Dallas; A Woman's Face; All This and Heaven Too. And the women's movies that were a little less tearjerky: The Women; Mr. Skeffington; Julia Misbehaves; Mrs. Parkington.

And the funny ones: Duck Soup; Ball of Fire; Mr. Deeds Goes to Town; any W.C. Fields movie; The Lady Eve; The Miracle of Morgan's Creek; Aresenic and Old Lace; Bell, Book and Candle; I Married a Witch; Lady of Burlesque; Here Comes Mr. Jordan.

And the noir: Double Indemnity; Mildred Pierce; The Maltese Falcon; Shadow of a Doubt; The Third Man.

And the classics of the classics: Pride and Prejudice; Jane Eyre; Wuthering Heights; The Hunchback of Notre Dame; David Copperfield; Oliver Twist; Great Expectations; A Christmas Carol (both the 1938 and 1951 versions); Little Women.

And the musicals: Carousel; The Music Man; Oklahoma; Cabin in the Sky; Showboat.

And the old classic horror films: Frankenstein; Bride of Frankenstein; The Invisible Man; The Wolfman; Dracula (though I actually prefer the Hammer Dracula to the Bela Legosi film)

And some lesser-known, maybe not classic classics: My Bill; Lady for a Day; Tugboat Annie.

I'm sure I missed a lot.

I love the old Universal horror films, like The Wolfman, Frankenstein, The Creature From The Black Lagoon, etc., and their sequels. Today, they have more charm than actual scares, but as a little kid, I found Lon Chaney Jr.'s Wolfman terrifying.

There are so many to choose from.

Most movies by John Wayne were excellent. My favorite John Wayne movie is Hatari. He reportedly said that making Hatari was the most fun he ever had making a movie because of the impossibility of scripting all the animal scenes. The Quiet Man is also absolutely great.

And there are some movies made by Cary Grant such as Bringing Up Baby and Arsenic and Old Lace. He was also in Charade with Audrey Hepburn. I always enjoyed his Father Goose with Leslie Caron.

There are great musicals such as Oklahoma, Gigi with Leslie Caron, and The Music Man with Shirley Jones and Robert Preston. Also, West Side Story and Brigadoon.

Don't forget Captains Courageous and The Mountain with Spencer Tracey.

Or Christmas movies such as Miracle on 34th Street, It Happened on Fifth Avenue and Bob Hope's The Lemon Drop Kid.

I recently saw for the first time ever I Know Where I'm Going!.

And a great many great war movies. And westerns.

And many other great classics. Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window and The Birds.

Don't forget The Wizard of Oz, The Grapes of Wrath, The African Queen

And if you get into the 60s and 70s, there were movies like The Godfather.

Pick a favorite? Not likely.

Here's my list of old classics that would probably be on TCM every once in a blue moon:

- The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951)
- The War Of The Worlds (1953)
- Rear Window (1954)
- Vertigo (1958)
- The Birds (1963)

Obviously the last three are indicative that I like some of Hitchcock's movies, even Psycho, but I don't think TCM would show that one because of the shower scene. I have the Blu Ray of that one anyway.

Personally, I'm a fantasy nut. So things like the original Clash of the Titans and other movies about Greek legends, and the Time Machine tend to float to the top of my mind

The 1936 version of "Showboat"with the singer Allan Jones who is my favourite singer anyway.
I love the romance of a man who feels unworthy of his family and so disappears but still has them in his heart and reunites at the end, I love the film Paris Texas for similar reasons.

Trouble is, Amazon want £125 for Showboat! But at least you can see it on youtube!

Heres the tearjerker ending
