Capt. Picard: I understand what you've done here, Q. But I think the lesson could have been learned without the loss of 18 members of my crew.
Q: If you can't take a little bloody nose, maybe you ought to go back home and crawl under your bed. It's not safe out here. It's wondrous, with treasures to satiate desires both subtle and gross. But it's not for the timid.
I love this quote.
Somewhat applicable to "real life", as well.

As a species/race, the Q didn't offer much hope for attaining the supposed pinnacle of evolution.
Well...that was part of the point...why else would Q take such an interest in humanity in the first place? After Farpoint, he offered to make Riker a member of the Continuum--I believe at least part of the reason for this was so the Continuum could "better" itself by integrating the "new" human experience into itself.
And yes, that is why Q and...well, Q...had a child later on. I think more could have been done with that--guess VOYAGER ran out of time.
@FluttercordAspie93: I quite agree.
Discord is more "Q-like" now, in that he's not unnecessarily cruel--I think he's shifted into "lesson-giving" mode.

My favorite episode with 'Q' was Tapestry from Star Trek: The Next Generation.
That was a good one...see TV TROPES entry
"For Want of a Nail".
