I borrowed the first season of TNG brother, to my older brother is not a big fan of Star Trek, although he liked the Star Trek: ENT, then looked DS9 and VOY, from what he told me, he even started watch the original Star Trek from the 60's, I never I could not bring himself to watch it, is too old for me.

But my brother is not watched Star Trek The Next Generation, that is what he told me, was actually watching it but without going into deep in it, when TNG was first shown on TVP, our Polish State Television.

As I said I borrowed my brother TNG, but he said that he could not stand the first episode. "Encounter at Farpoint" my brother said that bigger dick and as hole as Q never been seen before:-).

He asked me if Q occurs only in this episode, I replied to him that Q is at least one episode for every seven seasons of TNG. My brother said that he will not watch it so as not to spoil his mood :D

I like Q, because he's a mix between clown and psycho. He puts the Enterprise crew on trial for the crimes of humanity, then returns shortly thereafter to tempt Riker with supernatural power. He endangers the crew again by introducing them to the Borg, but only when Picard arrogantly assumes humanity can't be defeated in space. There's always a method to Q's madness, regardless of the situation.

As a factual reference, Q wasn't even included in the first scripts for the series. Roddenberry only added him to "Encounter at Farpoint" when Paramount insisted on a 2-hour pilot episode.

Q's predecessor was Trelane ("The Squire of Gothos"); in spirit, if not canon. Trelane was just as petulant, just as annoying, just as self-centered, and just as powerful as Q.

The non-canonical book "Q-Squared" links the two characters as part of the Q-Continuum.

Me too. But my brother consider Q as a jerk. I like Q because is clever and funny.
Gregory House from House MD is also jerk but This does not change the fact, that he is very good doctor and usually have right. Just as "Q"

My favorite "Q" episode is this one when Picard thought that Q is gone, and he suddenly appeared dressed as traditional Mexican musican :D

That would be "Deja Q" you're thinking of.

I thought Q was a GREAT character! Everything he did was for a reason--every test, every trial, every riddle--he was trying to keep humanity from resting on its laurels, I think, reminding the crew that the Federation is not the be-all and end-all of everything, and that there is always something bigger and badder out there.

His "lessons" can even be applied to humanity right now, as in "never think you know everything" and "keep striving to be greater, for that is part of the fun of life itself."

Quote:
"For that one fraction of a second, you were open to options you had never considered. That is the exploration that awaits you. Not mapping stars and studying nebulae, but chartering the unknown possibilities of existence."

--Q to Picard, "All Good Things" (series finale)

He gets the best lines :)

Capt. Picard: I understand what you've done here, Q. But I think the lesson could have been learned without the loss of 18 members of my crew.
Q: If you can't take a little bloody nose, maybe you ought to go back home and crawl under your bed. It's not safe out here. It's wondrous, with treasures to satiate desires both subtle and gross. But it's not for the timid.

I found Q annoying.

The bit in the series finale where Q shows that everything since Farpoint was a test and the test was ongoing was a nice way to show some depth behind why Q did what he did, but the whole Q continuum seemed rather pathetic and sad.

In ST:VOY, when you had the Q liberated from the comet who wanted to commit suicide, it was made painfully clear that the Q had evolved to the point where they had learned it all, seen it all, done it all, etc. There was no more discovery, wonder, etc....just endless existence. "Death" was the last frontier for them.

Let's ignore, for now, that you'd think they'd be masters of time/space and would know the outcome of their interactions with Picard and others before they did it...hence the Q were not "all powerful," "all knowing," or "ever present."

So, what do the Q do? Two of them have a child...in the hope that raising him will bring new "life" (sic) into their existence.

Heck, V'ger from the first motion picture had a better ending. At least it "evolved" into something new so that it could discover what was beyond the physical universe it had studied.

As a species/race, the Q didn't offer much hope for attaining the supposed pinnacle of evolution.

My favorite episode with 'Q' was Tapestry from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Q also reminds of Mr. Mxyzptlk from Superman and DC Comics.

I love this quote. :-) Somewhat applicable to "real life", as well.

Well...that was part of the point...why else would Q take such an interest in humanity in the first place? After Farpoint, he offered to make Riker a member of the Continuum--I believe at least part of the reason for this was so the Continuum could "better" itself by integrating the "new" human experience into itself.

And yes, that is why Q and...well, Q...had a child later on. I think more could have been done with that--guess VOYAGER ran out of time.

@FluttercordAspie93: I quite agree. 8) Discord is more "Q-like" now, in that he's not unnecessarily cruel--I think he's shifted into "lesson-giving" mode.

That was a good one...see TV TROPES entry "For Want of a Nail".

As far as I'm concerned, Q, Mr. Myxlplyx, and Bat-mite were all expelled from the same anus. I hate them.
