Personally, I love the character. There is so much of me in there, and Atkinson performs him so well that I can only applaud him. (and laugh hysterically of course, though his Vacation movie was a bit disappointing) At the same time, I can see that the core of the humour is that he is presented as subject of ridicule for being the steriotyically familiar Aspie. I have met women who absolutely hate the character, claiming that he makes their skin crawl. As a guy, I can't imagne where that reaction would come from but apparently it's sincere. That said, I'm quite sure that there have been times in my life when I have provided NT women the same service.

Anyway, I'm very curious to hear some of your reflections on the whole Mr. Bean thing.

The T.V series of Mr. Bean are way better than the movies.
I searched on google and a website said that he was supposed to have Autistic traits. Or was it Rowan Atkinson?

I loooove him.

Not so keen on the films though.

But the TV series is classic gold.

I'm sure he's a bit of an ASer himself, haha.

I didn't think the character was ever meant to have AS. Whoever created him created him to be naive, eccentric, shy, doesn't communicate well, not pick up on other cues or body language, etc.
Which all happens to be part of the autism spectrum.

yes i liked the tv series, it makes the ribs hurt though from laughing. The character does seem to have autistic traits because he does not talk much and has his own unique style of solving problems, even though they are very eccentric he often solves them in the end. Also the way he is so literal in the way he interprets things and how direct he is when he goes about doing something with out paying attention to the norms often appearing rude or selfish.

Rowan Atkinson has always been funny...

Does anyone remember him in Quark...

It was one of his first shows - sort of a send up of Star Trek. I wish you could get it on DVD.

Funny -- he gets on my nerves RIGHT AWAY!

I just think this is another woman vs. man thing -- Men like Mr. Bean, women usually don't. It's kind of like the Three Stooges -- men love them, women don't.

I used to watch the show when it was on ABC, I remember that it was funny; interestingly enough, I never thought his lack of speech was weird in anyway, his overt and obtuse body language made up for it (yes, I can read body language when it's filmed).

I don't think he is AS, I think of him more as a childish sociopath.
